I've got one of those, and yes it truly is a trickle charger. It puts out enough umph (50mA or so in the noon summer sunshine) to compensate for the battery drain from the permanent connection to my ex-car stereo.

Just got a 40 watt panel from sunrise energy from ebay here. £105 inc P&P and 5 metres of cable, bypass diode and connectors. Claimed output 2.35 Amps but I had 2.7 out of it so very pleased. They do 10 to 200 watt panels...

Maplins also have a 60W,12V panel for £199 complete with regulator. In the Med. that's just about enough to run a fridge.

Is it waterproof?

It'll withstand rain and hail & is tested with a steel ball falling onto the tempered glass and in 60 M/S wind. It'll normally sit on the coach roof and I will take it inside if sailing in rough weather though...
