Hi

Looking for some where to go next week and at the moment Chatham is top of the list for the Maritime Museum. Does anybody know how easy the busses are from the Marine to Upnor Castle, I think you cant walk through the tunnel.

Thanks

Not sure you can do exactly that, you might need to get a train from Chatham or Rochester to Strood, then get a bus.
Local bus services listed HERE , I haven't studied them but you can!
We don't really do buses on East Coast Pilot but I've made an exception here... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not sure there is a bus to upnor, if there is I think its one of those monday, wednesday and every 2nd friday (if its not raining) type services. However a taxi might not be too expensive as it would go through the tunnel as opposed to through the town centre, less than 3 miles. Failing that row your dinghy across to upnor.....

Far easier and more interesting, in my view, would be a bus to Rochester. Norman castle, cathedral, museum and Dickens stuff, plus decent places to eat. In fact, you could even take the boat instead, and moor on the visitors brths under the castle, just upstream of the road/rail bridges.

I think your best bet woiuld be a taxi to Upnor, not far(7-8 minutes by car) and therefore inexpensive. Pedestrians and cyclists cannot use the tunnel.

Upnor castle area is interesting but only for a brief visit in my opinion and as a sole destination on that side of the river not really worth it. The advice to got to Rochester instead, has my vote too

I agree with others that a taxi is the best bet. Althought the castle is the only real point of interest (and it is well worth visiting), the last time I was there the local pub did a good lunch.
Rochester Castle keep is the tallest in England and has one "odd" corner turret, round where the other three are square. This was the result of rebuilding after that turret was undermined in the 1215 seige by King John. A good history of the castle is here.

The trouble with taxis I've found in the Medway Towns, is that even if you find one to take you from the marina area to Upnor (perhaps more possible these days with the cinema and restaurants by the marina), you might have a lot of grief getting one to come and fetch you for the return journey. They tend to like to stay near the town centres and grumble like mad if they have to go too far out.
If there is a bus to Upnor from Chatham, it will be easy to use, as there's a frequent shuttle bus from outside the cinema into the main bus station, which is the hub where all the other services run from.

Thanks folks.

We did Rochester a few years ago. A trip to Upnor with lunch at the Ship may be on the cards..
