Chatham Marina ?

I am considering parking my boat at Chatham MDL Marina, any views on that. The boat is a 6.1mtr cuddy with a 4.3ltr Volvo Penta, I have a 1yr old daughter to think about (re some safe places to go when she is on board), but would like the option of giving it a blast when she is not.

Had a look there, my boat would look like a tender to most of the others.

Any info for or against would be appreciated,

Cheers

Pete

Couple of posters hereabout have boats there. If you hang about a bit one of them will wake up and give you some info.
Lots of quiet bits up various creeks and once past Folly point you can go a bit quick.
If weather Ok "no E or NE" winds on falling tides you can whizz round The
island in an hour or three.
Allington is about 2 hours in the other direction and once through scruffy bit New Hythe/Snodland(watch for rubbish in water) upper bit of river is as pleasant if not more so than certain or rivrs not far away and lots less crowded.
Big pain is nowhere really decent to mmor for grub/beer .

Just hold tight dear it will not be so rough when we get round the corner, trust me.

I've been at Chatham since July came down from Penton Hook and before that Brighton.
Plus points : Nice new Marina with wide pontoons, excellent ablutions, 24 hr lock, quit cheap
lift out and bottom clean, (was in Aug anyway) Staff friendly
Down points : No other facilities like shop, pub (cept a mile away) no chandlery and no engineers.
Good location for access to S coast and France, ok if you wanna go out for quick spin if weather
too bad for estuary, cos its 9 - 10 miles down to sheerness alone.

As oldgit say other creeks to explore but no places to my knowledge, to stop for a pint like
on the on tidal thames.

Because Clive was impatient and clicked to send twice.

Re: Why I am seeing double? NM.

What happens and it happens to us all, is you untick the "I want to review my post" press continue having
givin it only a cursury glance then spot an error as it is sending hit stop button then back button
and after correcting press contunue not nowing that the first post got through spelling error an all.

And before you say it yes I should wait till its on the list then quickly edit it.

By the way see if you can spot the one with the spelling error and tell me what the mistake was.

We are at Gillingham Marina and have been since May. It's quieter than Maritime and I think a tad more secure as its not visible from the road.
Wife decide Bogs (happy Byron) were better at Chatham than ours but on balance preferred ours. Loads of small boats at GM.

Thanks to everyone for your views. I agree that the bogs / ablution block / heads / shower / urinals / toilets or whatever you want to call them are 1st class, just a shame there isn't a social club (not in the toilet block). I have to use MDL as I have a credit from one of their other Marinas, I was just wandering about the safety aspect for a child on a boat in the Medway. I have bought the boat but due to take delivery in Feb / Mar next year, it may be useful to get a guide for my first maiden voyage (free beer included). I have bought a 2003 model Glastron GS209 Cuddy, it isn't the best boat in the world, but OK as a starter boat I think. If anyone is interested in guiding me through what I may or may not need to equip the boat, please let me know, e.g. do you need flares in Aylesford? !!!

I met with the Wareham lot yesterday and met some nice people down there. I have bought a Snipe twin axled trailer so should be able to move the boat around if required. Is there a slipway near that would save the extortionate lifting out fee? I was going to have the boat anti-fouled, views on this would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

Pete

Medway should be safe for child, 6 knot limit from Chatham to just past Gillingham plenty of activity
at times and some wash but nothing to worry about, (Oldgits gonna say its my wash)
good thing is you can go 9-10 miles to Sheerness then if it looks crap in the estuary you can turn
round. I'm at Chatham berth B8 right near the posh "ablution" block.
If I'm going out next week your welcome to come alone for a cruise, might have to put up with
oldgit if hes around.

One thing I forgot to mention, Baby seat and a couple of those luggage strap things. Leaves SHMBO arms free when doing the stringy bits of the trip. If your little one is like ours, give them half an hour and the engine puts them to sleep.

Trail the thing around. You'll see more and do more. Poole is a brilliant place for the kids. Plenty for them and you to do on and off the boat. Your not that far from me, It takes me around 2.5 hours to tow down there. At a tenner a launch and park the car, you can't go wrong. Just one tip, if you see a walkaround fisher, give it a wide berth, it a very bad influence!

Yeah! I know its running rough, but your lucky its running at all!!

Thanks for the info Barry, I will keep in touch. Re 'the walkaround fisher', I think I have seen that one somewhere before, the one I saw had feathers on the bow and around the engine, could it be the same one?

I have a choice of M1 (opposite Miranella), next to Annaletheia on D (a bit tight there), between M & L, Golden Arrow and Cloud 9 (in the centre tied to the main bit of the pier), or perhaps next to Deep secret, but that is an 11 mtr and would be subject to nothing else turning up, it would however give me room to practice parking!!!

Re next week it would be great, I am available most of Wednesday, send me a PM.

OldGit and Grumpy1, what more do you want?

Had a mooch around the other side of Chatham Maritime with family, over near the Ship & Trades. Had a brilliant meal in the S & T and a wander round Havengore an 85ft RN boat. She is the boat that took Winston Churchills body up the Thames, beautifully restored. MT Kent is there as well an ex RN tugboat.

Jim,

Thanks for the info, I have only been there the once, but could see that there would be enough to do for a season. It seems pretty safe for a first go with a 1yr old. I hope to be there Feb / Mar 2003, I am just sorting out which mooring to reserve.

Cheers,

Pete

Pete,
Glad to see you've found the mobo forum as well as rib.net!
Chatham is a nice marina - we've organised a RIB cruise to there a couple of years running. People are very friendly and the Ship & Trades pub does excellent food and Shepherd Neame beer! Medway and tidal thames will give you and your son a good cruising ground. A run up to London, mooring up on the inside of the Tower pier is always a good laugh and immensely posy in your own boat!

Cheers,
Alan
