That quoted reliability in both links is for (some) CD-R's though, not mastered CD's, and as we know there are some rubbishy brands out there.

I, personally, have never had a problem with them, but I always buy name brands. However, my experience with CD-RW is of quite low reliability but only ever use them for unimportant temporary storage.

Unless subject to some sort of abuse, I believe I am correct in claiming that mastered CD's (such as one gets music and original software on) are extremely reliable. For example, your mastered copy of WinXP or MSOffice is not going to deteriorate if left in the light.

I have plenty of cd's that develop 'white noise' after being left in car or outside sleeves etc.

A good friend of mine runs a CD / Video company and his information was led me to discover the fact about the dye / paint film and its susceptibility to heat etc.

As to the Hard drive ---- the caddy goes in my flight bag, gets jostled / put in strange places on boat etc. and has never vfailed me yet.

For me I have loads of Beer_Mats - thats failed or faulty CD-R's from recordings etc. Some lasted years - some lasted only weeks .. and I use good quality gear as well.

Hi Neil

Were the GPS handhelds write offs? I had a newish Magellan "freeze" recently, but agency got it going again in a few hours on return to civilisation. Disconcerting at the time, but fortunately the back up had most necessary waypoints in it from a previous similar trip. Have forumites any experience of this?

Panasonic CF 27 500 MHz or the new CF 28 ( does the same things but at 1.8 g. Hz for a fraction of the price.

The hard drive is packed in gel inside a "caddy"
The actual hard drive inside the caddy (20, 40 or 60 etc) is a standard unit and is inexpensive and generic.

Buy a second caddy on ebay and have a complete back up that slots into the Panasonic. Same computer used by the US Coast Guard was used on small cutters at cost of 6000 dollars can be purchased on ebay or from a vendor for $350.00

HDD caddy ....

My caddy is a bog std Q-TEC 751H see http://www.qtec.info/products/product.htm?artnr=13214

The HDD has to be a slim-line 2.5" job ... and is screwed into the base of the caddy and a top clipped on closing the whole lot into a slim neat package ..... cost about 20 quid. Any slim 2.5" HDD from a notebook .... as I said - I use gash ones that come out of company notebooks when we upgrade them in HDD size. Currently I have a 60Gb in there, but also have other HDD's of 3.5, 4, 6 and 12GB that have all had time in the caddy .... takes only a minute to change .....

Hi Thrall,
Both were handhelds and suffered moisture effects which took out more and more lines of display, they eventually dried out after some weeks in a warmer climate. They work but with display lines missing, but are good for input to chart plotter. They were both Garmin.
