Charts for CPN

Not sure what you mean by this but if you're referring to tpb that didn't host any of this pirate material anyway, and hasn't been shut down. The torrents are still there and the search website is still there. The only thing that changed is that UK ISPs are required to block access to the search.

No, wasn't referring to TPB. The source of less than legal charts I knew of was a Russian guy who hosted his files on one of the big cloud download sites which now seems to have had a fit of legality after the prosecutions in New Zealand (or was it Australia?)... Anyway - pleased to hear they are still out there somewhere. In my experience TPB was a pretty poor source of navigational material

Maptech charts work fine with OpenCPN so there must be a reason why they are failing on your set-up.

Do your Maptech charts works OK on that laptop with any other software? If so then the problem must lie with your OpenCPN set-up. All I can suggest in that case is a complete removal and re-installation of the latest stable OpenCPN and the associated plug-in.

If the charts have not been used on that machine, then they probably haven't got the correct licence key. Remember Maptech charts are locked to a particular machine. You can't just copy them to another machine; you have to do a full re-install using a new key (that can only be provided by Maptech).

Sorry to drag this up again - now that the summer is out of the way, I am giving it another go.

The issue seems to be with the BSB4 Plugin. I have downloaded it into C:\Program Files\OpenCPN\plugins as suggested by Open CPN.

When I go to the Toolbox/Plugin tab, to enable this plug in, it does not appear as being available.

In the directory, the file is showing as
C:\Program Files\OpenCPN\plugins\bsb4_win32_pi15_v10_pi.dll

When I try to open it, I get "OpenCPN message" window which says "Unexpected parameter 'C:\Program Files\OpenCPN\plugins\bsb4_win32_pi15_v10_pi.dll'

Any ideas?

Not sure if it is the problem or not, but you don't have latest version of the plugin. v1.2 was released in March. Looks as though you have v1.0.

I assume you are running OpenCPN v3.0

Well spotted geoid, yes I did have the old plug in, now corrected and enabled under the Plugin tab...... but still no charts :(

My active chart directory is showing as C:\ChartKit\BSBCHART which useful as this where the charts are stored!

Your directories are the same as mine which seems to work OK.

As well as installing the registered charts in C:\ChartKit\BSBCHART, you need to add C:\ChartKit\ as an active chart directory. This is done in Toolbox - Charts. It is then necessary (I think) to scan charts and update database under update control.

SUCCESS!! Despite having hit Force Full Database Rebuild before I upgraded the Plug In, as soon as I did it again with the new Plugin enabled, all was revealed.

Goodbye Chart Navigator Pro, as it is no longer supported. :):)

you need to know where to source them but will almost certainly be out of date but still seem to be good enough
i am told the files are in excess of 1.2Gb for world charts
Actually 9Gb for the world charts, and that's in compressed form.

As already pointed out the C-Map Ed2 are pirated but, unlike most other electronic charting are to ECDIS standard - the latest are corrected to 2008.

They are, however, purely maritime charts and will have little reference to inland waterways, being produced for commercial shipping.

All NOAA information is in the public domain, unlike UK Hydrographic charts which are fiercely protected and, in ECDIS form very expensive. The charge is made for converting the information into the vector database.

Maptech use NOAA basic information, but charge for their conversion, again no inland waterway information.

Nearly all proprietary map-systems are ECS ie come with the proviso that you do not use them as your primary navigation source.
