We are taking our 27 foot yacht to the channel islands and St Malo area this summer. What charts have the forum found most useful. I have used Imray 33A and 33B in the past but found them very cluttered. I am considering the Admiralty Lesuire chart Folio for the area. What is the Forums opinion on this chart pack

The small folio charts are good - especially where your chart table is limited in size. However a good pilot is an essential back up to the chart.

Matter of what you are comfortable with but IMHO you need the detail the HO and SHOM charts give. Lots of isolated rock outcrops in this area and I would not go anywhere near Chausey or Minques with the scant info from Imray.

I would argue that Robson is STILL the definitive 'pilot' book for the Islands - none of namby pamby discussion of resaurants et al, just page after page of pen and ink transits. Shame the poor man couldnt see a way to carry on his lifes works. As he says in one of the books, the best way to prove transits is by bumping of rocks occasionaly - we are fortunate he did the 'research' for us!

Admiralty charts are my preference for the Islands ( the yachtsman portfolio is convenient and has it all). If you want to explore away from the Sound in Chausey then the relevant SHOM chart is a MUST. Minquiers is doable with the transits from the pilot book if all you want is to pick up the States bouy. Les Ecrehou is better with local knowledge aboard. All other regular anhorages and passages are straightforward with the right data.
