I’ve just installed OpenCPN which is all new to me. I already have Garmin and Memory mapping programmes and UK charts but would like to add some charts for OpenCPN. To help get started i have a couple of questions.

Q1 Can I (or how can I) import the memory maps into openCPN?

Q2 Where can I find a source of charts for the Ionian sea, that can be used with openCPN?

Yes

OpenCpn can read your existing bsb raster charts that you use with Maptech. Theres a "plug-in" for Opencpm to read BSB4 charts which seem to be a little more demanding. There is a thread already going on this subject.

(Im a Maptech OSN user migrating to OpenCpm for the AIS support)

PS - DJBREEZE - can you send me that pm also, especially if your source includes Cyclades and Dodecanese ;)

Re Affinite- ditto re Maptech user with no AIS function, so trying to set up OpenCPN for that purpose. I got IDC because of the AIS capability, but it is not full AIS-eg no CPA and of course you have to buy a new one annually. However, as per other threads, not straightforward to set up and not straightforward to read BSB 4 maptech charts, even with the plug-in, tho evidently does BSB 3 (Kap) charts readily enough as I think no encryption issues with those.

I have managed to free download [removed by admin] Takes an hour or two and quite a bit of mucking about uncompressing them etc when downloaded!) which looks to give worldwide coverage and that certainly includes the Med and have these working with the OpenCPN, but no GPS function at present.

GPS now working!

Q1... I'm pretty sure you will not be able to use Memory Maps in OpenCPN. They are encrypted. All other charts can be added by making a new folder in Program files and downloading your charts into there. Go to toolbox/charts on OpenCPN and find your new marked folder in the window, open the folder and highlight each chart portfolio and then press add selection.

Q2...Again PM sent.

Memory Map charts are actually Maptech BSB4 format and CAN be read by OpenCPN.

There is a plug-in available from SourceForge (where you download OpenCPN). There is another thread that covers loading them (and associated problems) - see from Page 2.

My mistake then Playtime... thanks for that.

Just as an aside. I took my laptop with me on a recent trip back from Leros island in the Dodecanese to Portugal and used OpenCPN for all my passage planning along the way. Navigation though by means of paper and chart/plotter.

A gentle reminder

Hi everyone,

We have received complaints that you are breaking copyright laws by circulating instructions or links that allow users to illegally download charts.

If we see any examples of this in posts, our legal team have advised us to remove them. Please don't use PMs to circulate this information either.

Thanks,

Laura
