I'm looking at purchasing a chartplotter. I see there is a big difference in price between various models. What should I be looking for and how easy are they to install? My budget is £1000 but if i can spend less ££ the better

Depends what screen size you want (bigger is better in my book) but you may have a certain space to fit in. Also what facilities you want, sonar/fishfinder/engine monitoring etc. Does it need to connect and talk to other kit you already have? The Std Horizon ones are good value, but for me the Garmin 750s is a good all round stand alone unit. Touch screen and very easy to use and should be available for your budget. Plenty more advice will follow :)

I agree with ripster....my S23 came with a garmin GPS550 chart plotter. The spec is decent but I'd prefer a touchscreen model with a wider screen.

you don't say what boat you have.

If it has an enclosed helm, or it's a displacement boat and don't mind navigating yachty style down below, an iPad is the most cost effective solution.

If it needs to be used outside the rules change.

Recently purchased Garmin 750; fantastic and very easy to use.I also added to it a Garmin g2 vision SD card (just over £140), and well worth it.
I saw it being demonstrated to another guy and after seeing it was difficult to drop down the range to a cheaper model.

Garmin excel functionally and for exceptional ease of use.

Ps. iPad great for ultra portable web, mail and marine weather, tide apps and as a novelty or backup nav, but NOT for primary nav use.

As others have said, it would be good to know what other electronics it needs to integrate with, ie what stuff you already have installed and what boat, etc

Subject to that, Garmin is the best. Buy the biggest screen you can fit (in the dash and your budget). Remember to allow £100-200 extra for a chart memory card

Take a look at the Digital Yacht - Plotter / AIS Combo. Within your budget including card and fitting. I am happy with mine.

I've got the chance of buying the Garmin GPS 5012 for £1,999 including the G2vision card, and whilst I can't really afford it right now, I'm struggling to resist the temptation!
At this price it's about 700 quid cheaper than "normal" price.
Tempting indeed!

I put 4000 series networked(4012 and 4008) on mine about a year ago and they are superb. I wanted the 5000 series touch screens but they were nearly double the price and I was too mean to pay it. The G2 blue vision card is brilliant too, but TBH I tend to only use the maps - old habits I guess.
