chartplotter options.

i am fitting out new cruiser,and would like your opinion on whether to put main chartplotter in cockpit and repeater at navtable.or the other way around. or other option put cheaper plotter at navstation and use raymarine c80 in cockpit.would be pleased to have your opinions on best option.

depends whether you will be sailing single handed. I always prefer to have cockpit repeaters, however if you are using it at the helm perhaps at night then I would have the main plotter mounted in the cockpit

I sail single handed an that is why I have the chart plotter visible from the steering position. That is where I need it.

I use a laptop for passage planning so I can always copy waypoints/routes onto my C-map cards for transfer to te chart plotter

I use a laptop at the nav station and have the instruments and auto pilot remote there also.

At the helm position is the chartplotter that repeats all the data.

All the navigation is done at the computer and the chartplotter only used when hand steering coming into harbour.

c80 is a nice piece of kit and visible from a distance so if flush mounting it in the cocpit so that it's visible from the helm is an option this would be my recomendation.

enables sticking your head out from below to view it and or sitting in the cockpit playing with it etc etc and you don't need to leave the cockpit to read more detailed numbers etc (although I suspect you can increase the font size of the important data overlays to be visible from a fair distance).

My feeling is that it should be visible from the watch-keeping position... and I don't spend all my time grappling with the wheel...

I agree, mine is fitted at the chart table, and is visible from the cockpit, I use a windvane when sailing and a tiller pilot when motoring, so I am very rarely at the helm, on passage.
