Does anyone know why my new Garmin Gpsmap 555 does not show any detail on certain parts of the Western Isles, e.g. approaches to Grimsay, unlike the admiralty chart. which shows the lot?
Have you tried it a t different scales on that map...I find that on my plotter there can be inconsistancies between areas (charts) but if I change the scale the detail appears.
Different electronic charts work in very different ways. As you change scale some charts get enormously cluttered, others subtract detail. My NauticPath chart only shows buoys at one or two scales to avoid clutter. OTher chart types make the buoys smaller and illegible. Dont yet know which method is best. IT is often a problem of low pixel count on the plotter display. Many of the smaller screen plotters are pushing up pixel count quite fast and the displays become much more readable in consequence.

Yes, I've tried it all scales. There is no detail at all. I suppose it's something I'm just going to have to live with. Just goes to show that we shouldn't rely solely on plotters for navigation. I would hate to try an approach to Grimsay without a chart.
I have played around with my GPSMAP450 (same pixels, smaller screen) im the living room, doing a virtual tour of interesting bits of the coast , and found that the basic chart provided is pretty good, but tends to chop off rivers and estuaries almost on a line with the coast in some cases. In some parts of the world, like Scotland, one had to sidle up to some islands and fool it to show more detail - choose a zoom detail level showing the kind of things you are interested in on something a few miles away then pan for ages without changing zoom. I am sure I had to fight hard to get e.g. St Kilda and see more than a small blob.
I think they want you to buy extra Bluecharts to get back the detail, and enable auto routing and 3d plotting.
Can't remember exact sequence of button pressing, but have you been into the settings menu, then Appearance and change the Detail setting to most? My Garmin 550 worked fine from the box, but two people that I know have bought them more recently and have had to change the setting to get detail of the River Medway in Kent.
