I have a Garmin GPS MAP 276C which is the portable one with a LI battery. My new boat had a GPS and although this is no longer in situ, the power cable is. The cable plug has 7 pin holes and the Garmin socket has 4 pins. I also know the VHF DSC is connected to the GPS as I can see the wiring. Anyway the question is:

Is it possible for me to remove the plug on the old power cable and (matching the wires that are there) replace it with the one from Garmin. Also will there be 7 wires used in the cable from the old (and it is quite old) GPS or are they likely to be unused?

If anyone could shed some light on this before I get my wire cutters out I would be very gratefull!
 
Assuming there is a 12v feed on the cable you can use this to power your 276C.

Although there are only 5 pins on the 276c, there are connections. This is because the connection arrangement makes use of additional connectors located around the circumference of the connector. The manual shows the arrangement and the pin out (see page 103).
 
My prepered option for wiring in GPS units is to put in a junction box (eg one of these) and bring all the wires to the box. Use the connector block for the power leads (you can reduce it if you want), and join the data leads with Scotchloks.

That way you can easily change or add extra kit (repeater, AIS, PC etc) in the future.

Unfortunately, I think that is highly unlikely.
