Hi I am new to boating and want to get an IPad charting App to compliment my admiralty paper charts. I have seen an App called SeaNav UK and Ireland nautical charts which suggests it has all the admiralty charts for the mentioned area. It's £14.99 which is exceptional value.

Has anybody any experience of this App? Or have any suggestions on other IPad chart based Apps.

Thankyou for your help

It certainly seems great value mainly because it includes Admiralty Vector charts. I'm also looking for an iPad app and hope forumites will step up to the mark and give some views! There are too many out there to buy the lot! Tempted by Navionics as that's what our Raymarine plotter uses, anyone care to comment on whether that makes it a more useful buy?

Cheers!

We have just moved across from a garmin to a raymarine chartplotter, (125 and 127),so are now able to take full advantage of the navionics ipad app. It's fantastic but could be seen as costly...I think the uk and holland was around £38.
However when put against paper equivalents and the fact that it syncs seemlessly with the chart plotter, we are made up.
So, you can lie in bed, plan a route, (it will auto plan if you want), tidy up and then when we are next at the helm the ipad asks if you want to sync our routes across devices...works well.

We have used a few other app charts but the navionics seems the most professional. Be aware there are loads of different versions so ensure to get the correct one...any questions just ask and will assist if able.

Navionics seems the bees knees. It also looks like the UK and Holland HD is exactly what I need. It does now of course make me wish I had bought the IPAD with 3G as to have the GPS. New Ipad's get showcased tomorrow. So might by an IPad mini with GPS. thanks NP

Kind regards

Looks like Navionics is getting the vote! An iPad mini with GPS and navionics app could be a good additional backup nav station by the look of it.

It is a nice bit of kit and if you have the raymarine app and plotter with wifi you can make on the fly adjustment on the pad, zoom in and out, effectively use it as a remote terminal. Its really clever and lets the copilot get involved without leaning across the helm. There are some neat in app purchases such as auto routing, fuel burn and sea bed. Things like integrated weather and tides are already there. Makes me wonder whether navionics might find the app is counter productive in terms of negating the need for an in helm plotter...

I would get a second hand ipad2 3G over a mini - better price and a much easier screen to read. Another vote here for Navionics HD

Another vote for Navionics. Also add the advanced Nav module which costs a couple more pounds but adds a lot of helpful features such as ETA on a passage. Found it all really useful since purchase this spring.

Pan, that was going t be my second question  We have a networked E80 and E120. is there a way to break into this network to add a wireless router? As my understanding is its a IP based system.

Hi Pan, I have just got this off of the Raymarine site. it looks as though what we want to do is possible. but they do not support it. Definitely worth a little experimentation?

For maximum performance of RayTech RNS 6.0, Raymarine recommends that a hard-wired connection between the computer and SeaTalkhs network or an E-Series Multifunction Display be employed

While it is technically possible to network a wireless access point to a SeaTalkhs network or an E-Series Multifunction Display and have RayTech RNS 6.0 access Navionics cartography, radar, fishfinder, GPS, instrument, and navigational data, performance may vary depending on the wireless standard (i.e. 802.11g, 802.11b, etc.) used. Maximum wireless performance will be achieved with a computer featuring wireless 802.11g Wi-Fi standard.

I feel if you have If you have a spare port on your raymarine switch, it should be possible just to plug a wireless router into it. maybe something similar to this

Garmin BlueChart Mobile

I have BCM with entire Northwestern Europe, and Navionics HD (UK/Holland). Both very good but Garmin's real time weather overlay including rainfall radar, and their chart presentation combined with Active captain means it gets used much more than my Navionics HD app. But that's just my personal taste. Before BCM came out I had been very happy with Navionics. Both are good value.

Btw, we have an iPad and iPad mini (Froggette's) on board both 3G models. When my iPad gets too long in the tooth I will be getting an iPad mini - simply the best tab on the planet for now by a country mile. But like all gadgets that don't find an afterlife on eBay may end up a dust collector on top of a dressing room wardrobe. :)

Hi Oceanfroggie, thanks for your input. I love the apple kit and have nearly all their products. I have both an IPad 1 and IPad 3 in my collection but its definitely time for an upgrade and I do a lot of traveling and the Mini I feel will suit my lifestyle better. Thats what i have told my wife anyway :D I am awaiting the apple keynote to start for the new Ipads etc in 30 mins...

I will have a look at the App you recomended. I had considered that one app may not fit all requirements. which is fun from a techie perspective.

Got to be worth a try and also to integrate with our better WiFi on board project... Would also save the need for a Bluetooth GPS unit or GPS iPad... ;)
