Chartering ...

whilst perusing the MAIB's latest safety digest, I noted that the majority of incidents thought worthy of our attention were in chartered yachts .... do we throw our brains away when hiring such machines and, if so, why?

The only yachts I've chartered in recent times have been Army & Regimental yacht/sailing club vessels and I can assure you - you bloody well look after those !!

One would suspect that a more valid analysis would be by analysis of the experience of the skippers. Intuitively I'd imagine that most accidents are down to lack of experience with many charter skippers experience being a couple of weeks sailing a year. Theoritical knowledge (a la Kant) is no substitute for miles.

of course ... and thon day we were trying to reduce a bilge keeler to a fin and skeg is no reflection at all on the vastly experienced and talented skipper & crew as we hurtled across Melfort in a F6+ ........ !!!
