Hi all

The big 50 for me next year ! Gulp..only feels like yesterday I was 18 ..hey ho..

Anyway...shmbo is asking me what we are gonna do...naturally will invoke boats and sunshine. So am thinking about chartering something (2/3 cabins required) in Europe but not sure where to go south of france, the islands or somewhere exotic.. Anyone had experience of chartering for a week or two and anyone with a good story or ideas?

Try Andy at Ocean Marine Group (andy@omgyachtcharters.com). He is a broker for charterers and has a good idea what is available in many different locations. He's organised bareboat charters for us in Florida (the Keys, Lagoon 44) and Croatia (Targa 52).

Once you ask for 3 cabins you've narrowed your options if you want bareboat. 3 cabin boats tend to be the bigger models and you don't get many available without having to take a skipper (assuming you don't want one of course!). The Targa 52 was the largest we found.

Thanks for the tip. Will drop him a line today. I realise the 3 cabins Pushes us up the ladder a bit and your right I don't really want a skipper. I just don't think it would be the same with someone else on board.

Cruising around the Spanish islands is top choice at the moment as would love to know why they are soooooo expensive...must be something fantastic there..

We chartered a Sealine T51 from Vitesse on Mallorca, Puerto Portals if I remember. They did have a 3 cabin F42/5 as well. Was a couple of years ago though.

I have just returned from holiday in the Med along the costa Brava. The scenery and location were very good from a boat point of view. It is easy to get down to Barcelona or go north into France. I chartered from NOVAIMPORTS Gerona they were reasonably priced compared to others in the location, easy to deal with and helpful. The parent company is Nautivela a small boat sales, repair company based in Viladamat. They have a fleet based in L'escala and Estartit. The advertised fleet is a bit limited if you want something substantially bigger than 10m I think Benateau Monte Carlo 32 is the biggest they have. However I would think they are open to supplying alternatives by private agreement.

It's also very interesting getting your boat briefing in Catalan, adds interest to the question ,"now what do you think he meant that switch was for...oops"

Also try COSTABRAVA SAILING based in Barcelona.
