Hi All, been talking in the pub with friends about planning a sailing trip in either the BVIs in the Carribean or Phuket Thailand. There will be 8 of us for two weeks. A 4 cabin catamaran has been suggested. About March time. What are the pros and cons with each location.
Thanks in anticipation. RPP

How much sailing & how much other stuff (restaurants, etc.) do you want? Haven't been to BVIs but have travelled quite a lot & worked (scuba) around Phuket/Phi Phi & would imagine BVIs to be more up market than most of Phuket & its environs. Should be easy sailing again at that time of year in Thailand though, great diving as well. If you haven't been to Thailand it & its people are wonderful...:)

Take a look at www.LateSail.com they guarantee not to beaten on price and there is a name your price page. Also on the country/charters available pages there are are notes on the area, sailing conditions and suggested itinerary which hopefully will help your choice.

carib for me

Having chartered out of Phuket and Carib, I'd go Carib.

If you wanted to sail + something else , Thailand is great. But beaches are much better in Carib than out of Phuket, water much clearer (west coast Phuket beaches are better but not a yacht charter destination).

Thailand is quieter outside of tourist areas, longer flight, less choice on charter yachts. Stick to local food in Carib or high end the middle is a bit average and over priced.

Though I enjoy Thailand, the Carib has more atmosphere on islands and they offer some diversity and change. Wind is more consistent in the Caribbean.

What type of Sailing/Fun?

I'd start by saying WHY BVI? When there is a whole chain of islands in Carib to choose from........
Just depends on Crew, Sailing experience, What You like to do when the boat stops moving, etc.
Also factor in ease, cost & time to Get There....that can add up. Some destinations might have easier direct service from your nearest Int'l airport vs a series of connections with can be more expensive & time consuming
Weather - What is it like in Thailand during March?
In the end, sure each would work just depends if it matches your needs/expectations

Better sailing in the Caribbean, better food in Thailand!

+1! Also, got to be careful when you go to Thailand in March as you're approaching rainy season. When we went (supposed to be 1 mth before rainy season started), there was absolutely NO WIND...for several days, except when it rained. Squalls blew up out of nowhere, suspiciously appearing whenever we were anchoring near a reef!. Sadly, ended up motoring most days.

And if you're in to snorkeling, Thailand is great for coral - wonderful colours. But sadly no fish. Whereas BVIs has great underwater life, in all shapes, sizes and colours, but no living coral.

Have fun wherever you go :-)
