Re: In defence .... reply to Trouville

I dont see why your reply should be removed? Its very clear good reply.

I agree you have been very helpful and sea clear is a very good item, but saddly i still havent been able to enter a scaned chart! and it was i bit wiggely but still a scaned chart.

I agree also that your forums very good indeed and dose have some, what seems to be good soft wear, in fact i found some yesterday from www.globenav.com ?? i think?

You missed the point im not critisising per se your forum, just that its far beyond me and so far all the applications ive tried have not been succssesful to date!Becouse i simply cant understand how to use or sometime get them on the screen!!

Maptech was the only one that worked at all! but even for planning the map displayed is far to small and no matter how i put in kiel or Copenhagen (admitedly they do have many spellings) i have to start in Oslo and work very very slowly down!!

I dont understand what you meen about my "posts"??

It is a forum for those that have use and understand how to work with these new chart forms-which in gereneral are niether transferable nor compatable with different systems

I will say this and its no way a critisisum for your forum and all your hard work and time spent there trying to help, But there are other free forum hoasting out there, some much like this forum format hear!

Do have a good weekend enjoy your sailing (with e-charts??or paper??)

i'M AT THE MOMENT PLAYING AROUND WITH OZIEXPLORER, it is very detailed in the manual, which can not be said for SEACLEAR. It is not free, but you get what you pay for. It suppory MAPTECK.

This is a reply I got on a request same day.

>>> Does the maps have to be sticthed togeather, or can you load each scan,
>>> and the program will find the next one.

I assume you mean during moving map, yes OziExplorer will load the next map
when it leaves a map. Here is our Faq on how OziExplorer searches for maps.

If you want to merge the maps we have a MapMerge utility on our website.

I use Ozi-ex CE on the PDA - as it seems about the best way ... most others are either limited in function or overloaded screens. With a PDA you already have screen size limitation - putting toolbars and other crud on it doesn't help.
Ozi-ex on PC is useful for the support that it gives PDA formats etc. and so is useful - but having been designed more for Aussie outback driving - I find the program less inviting than others. In terms of data display that is important for boating ... Ozi-ex is poor in its presentation, Seaclear like most other Marine based software puts it out clearly to read without the need to spend too long looking at a screen .... when you should be keeping a look-out ....
Maptech and Seaclear are firm favourites with me ---- Seaclear far and away because of price and also its sensible and uncluttered display. Seaclear was literally the first to incorporate AIS, it also had passthru sorted long before many others.

I actually like the manual - as its simple and gives you what you need to know - BUT the one area that does fall down is the Passthru explanation .... once you get it working - the text then is seen correct !!

Many chart plotting programs are out there and all have their advantages etc. I honestly believe that many advocate a program because they spent hard earned cash on it and then HAVE to like it ... most are not cheap and its a dent in the pocket. There will always be those that like and those that don't ... what makes life interesting ....

For the present ... it's Seaclear on PC and Ozi-ex CE on PDA ... that way I get best of both worlds.
