Ah, I understand your point about the contour line being easier to see on the mono screen. But I think the "all water as the same shade of blue" feature must be unique to the Garmin hardware/software. I use C-Map charts on a Navman 5600, and it's possible to set up 2 separate depth limits - the display then shows the water in 3 shades of blue (surface to limit 1, limit 1 to limit 2, and below limit 2). So as long as I stay out of the light blue stuff, I'm OK!

Early software I suspect. It still wouldn't/isn't good for offshore banks etc etc. Some of the PC ploting programs are excellent for that as you can set a particular depth in the keel depth function and get a different picture of the ground you are fishing completely - try 33m off St Catherins Point as an example.
Anyhow - done the subject to death I think!
