Chart Plotters :- Garmin v Lowrance At London Boat Show

After a recent visit to the London Boat show, I went with the view of looking at the Lowrance 3500/3600 or the New Garmin 500 series chart plotter, after all Yachting Monthly in December stated "don't buy a chart plotter for Christmas until you see the new Garmin". Well I went with the view of evaluating the Garmin which is not available until the spring, but as my boat is on the hard till April this was not a major problem. All I can say is that I was very disappointed with the Garmin Rep. I asked for a demonstration and while I personally know very little about chart plotters, reckoned I new more than him, after trying to show the features of the "google earth" type display which did not work I then asked for a demonstration of what the chart plotter did and this was also seemed to be a problem.

I then went to the Lowrance stand where I asked for a demonstration of the 3500 / 3600 and was most impressed especially when I could get an answer to my wiring question of having the unit in two sites on deck and below deck. The Rep went through all the points for and against each option and costed out the additional wiring that would be required if external aerial option used (3500C). after initially wanting to go for an external aerial in my situation the internal option better suited my needs, all be it that the unit can be used down below for constructing way points and routes.

Overall the rep knew his stuff and was a credit to Lowrance. Needless to say which unit I bought (from M.E.S.), additionally it was roughly half the price of the Garmin.

Perhaps I was just unlucky with the Garmin rep, but then I was really lucky getting the Lowrance at a great price with free UK and Europe chart

Full marks to Lowrance

That's typical of many people's experiences of stand staff at major shows. I know it's difficult getting stand staff, but there seems little point in using staff who don't know the products.

The new Garmin 5x5 series does appear to have some great features, although I still think a 5" screen is a bit small for a serious plotter (or maybe it's my failing eyesight that's the problem!). Still, at around £830 for the 555 with UK charts versus around £410 for the Lowrance with NauticPath chart, you'd expect the Garmin to be good.

I went thinking the new Garmin would be the way to go, but decided to go with the Raymarine A65. Now just waiting for the spring to get out playing with it!

I bought a Lowrance 3600ci at the SBS - also from MES. I compared it with a small Garmin with lowish resolution display - The Lowrance had a muc better display hence the choice - ith the additional benefit of the NauticPath chart included. I dont know if your Garmin and mine were the same model.
I also bought one of the cheap engine start power packs with a cig. lighter socket so I could play with the plotter to my hearts content.
The result is I'm now fairly familiar with operating the plotter and have done a lot of checking my habitual Swedish cruising area. I think it was money well spent.

I have a Lowrance 3500C. I chose it because after looking at all the software, I thought that Navionics was for me since it's pretty much identical to Admiralty charts. Then I looked at screen resolution. The Lowrance won hands down. I also liked the way the map moved and the boat icon stayed about 2/3rds of the way down the screen when using 'course up' mode. I think that the Nauticpath charts being offered are ok but I prefer Navionics.

One benifit of the Naticpath charts is that the screen refresh is very fast
