Hi - I need to fit a chart light and see that apart from the usual snake type fitting with a red shade where the bulb gets very hot there are some LED models out there. All seem fairly pricey so was wondering if anyone has experience with these and if they are worth the extra cost. Advice would be very much welcome. Ed.

I bought a LED one in France and it is useless. The thing is too dim to see to fill in the log and gets dimmer every time it seems, plus the head is to heavy for the stalk and it has the worst case of brewer's droop possible. It has a little LED to show it is switched on, that is it's only sensible design feature because without it you would never know.

Beware that the only problem with LED red lamps is that any Magenta coloured lines and objects on your chart totally dissapear!! From memory it was the new Precautionary Area around the Sunk - good job I hadn't removed the original white lamp.

In my opinion you need both red and white chart lights. As has been pointed out with red lighting some marks on the chart just are not visible so you do need to have a low intensity white light available. A dimable white liteis best.
