I use a Pilot G Tech magenta colour pen with a 0.50 tip for chart corrections and having recently switched over to Imray charts which have a plastic feel to their top surface I find that even after the ink is dry it can smudge.

The pen isn't a chandlers item, simply one from my local Ryman- is there a better option

One or more Rotring drawing pens is a better bet (student pack of 3 pens is good value) but your challenge will be finding a permanent purple ink. Most of the so-called permanent purple inks are nothing of the sort, and Rotring themselves stopped selling such ink some time ago. I was lucky as my local art shop had a couple of bottles of the 'good stuff' in their store which were otherwise destined for the skip.
If you cannot find a good purple ink you may have to use a black Rotring ink which is permanent

I have in front of me a pack of 'NOBO' overhead projector pens with permanent ink and 'Fine' tips. They mark indelibly on any shiny surface.

The downside is that purple only comes in a pack of 8 colours and they aren't cheap.

I asked at the Imray stand at LBO for a correction pen and was assured that all they (Imray) ever use is a red fine tipped Bic biro and I can assure you that they are perfect for the task.

I have bought several of these for CD use. They all seem to dry out and become useless in a very short time no matter how careful I am in replacing the caps. I would try the red ballpoint method if I used Imray charts.

Fully agree with Cotillion. Most of my charts are Stanfords (waterproof)and Helen who used to run the business only ever used a decent ball point on them -no smudging. I tried several different things this year and ended up back with the biro!

I haven't updated paper charts for a number of years (have gone electronic) but I have overhead projector pens that must be 7 or 8 years old and still work ok.

Maybe the secret others miss is that one must replace the cap after use /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

I have a set of Rotring pens but many years ago an ex senior US naval officer who is a good friend scoffed at my foolishness of getting mixed up with messy ink and converted me to felt tipped pens.

Just had a couple of unexpected sailing days- bliss!

Hence the delay in responding to all your inputs for which I thank you- I'll work through the options and see which suits me best

Thanks again folks!
