Charging Voltage from Mariner 6hp 4 Stroke

Hi Folks

I have a Mariner 6hp 4 Stroke outboard which has been fitted with a charging kit. At tick over in gear i get around 2.5 volts went i rev the engine the most i get is 9 volts. My thoughts are that to charge the battery i should be getting over 13 volts. Does any one have one these engines if so what voltage do you get.

Certainly need more to charge the battery. 14V at least and expect to see a much higher voltage if you rev the engine with nothing connected. ( but with a digital meter ?????? I think to get a meaningful reading you may need a capacitor across the coil )

Check the continuity of the coil. Maybe someone can come up with a resistance figure.

Check the AC volts output from the coil.

Connect a 12 volt bulb directly to the coil A wattage nearly equal to the rated output. See if that lights properly. Thats the best way to check the coil output I'd think

Check the rectifier with a multimeter with a diode test range. It appears to be a simple half wave rectifier, not a bridge rectifier so that makes checking it easy

Not ever connected the battery with the polarity reversed I hope?

The other possibility which I have just experienced is corroded wire. They tend to use un-tinned wire on these kits which corrodes and blackens. Mine had corroded down to a few strands a long way down the wire close the the bridge rectified - in the end I had to dig out the old one - replace it with a new one from Farnell and re-pot it - it cost about £3 in all.

As previously suggested I would check the AC voltage going into this and if this is OK then check the output voltage or resistance along the wire. I did this by sticking pins in the cable at various points.
