I took my 1997 Chaparral 1830 ss out for the first run of the year and discovered that my tach is reading about 2000 rpm too high. It goes up and down with engine speed but always much higher than reality. Is there some way to adjust this, or do I just need to replace it? Any recommendations for a good replacement brand? Also, if I get a new tach with the hour meter, is there a way to adjust the hour meter to the same time that I have now, or must it start over at zero?

There is usually some sort of divider board in the tacho.
Is it reading twice the correct RPM ?.
Also the unit can sometimes be set up for 4/6/8 cylinder engines. If on the wrong setting will give an erroneous reading.

There is no issue with any setting, since it’s been working fine for 25 years.
Might be a button cell memory nicad or capacitor that has failed .
Some of the very early VP tachos ,which failed due to age, could be made to function again cheaply using a little external divider network on a commercially available PCB.

Quite common. Usually sorted out with a flick of the gauge for a while. I’d it gets worse…and it’s the usual fariah…you can find them on eBay usually. Or certainly used to be anyway.
