We arrived here yesterday, and headed for an empt,y space on the quay, but we're directed by a taverna owner to moor at his taverna..he indicated that his was the only safe place (aye..right). This is the Athena taverna,it has a large bougainvillea tree ,he was a bit bolshie to say the least.
Later in the evening we ate at the Olive Garden taverna, which had been recommended to us..it was excellent and very sociable staff.

This morning,Mr Athena asked us if we planned to stay another day,we said we did, whereupon he ordered us to move from in front of his place,as he wanted his guests to have an unobstructed view.
We refused, and he flew into a Greek rage, shouting and swearing ,despite our trying to point out that he had moved us to his taverna in the first place.
I said to him that if he asked politely,we would gladly shift along from the front of his place, but this made him even more furious.
So as I write,we are still here,he has placed tables at the back of the boat to try to make it difficult for us to get on and off. It's not.

In an hour or so,we are going to leave the harbour and go round to Mandraki bay, just round the corner, and anchor off,as it looks good for swimming, but he does not know that. I am just being bloody minded.

Kastellorizon is absolutely beautiful..welll worth a visit.

Update...we spent a very peaceful and sunny afternoon in Mandraki, took the dink in to have a meal in the evening and lo and behold,a couple of mega stinkpots are moored at his restaurant but the place is empty. Serves the barstewart right .

To reiterate... Kastellorizon is mega fab. Well worth a visit but avoid the Athena taverna ( the one with the bougainvillea)

Perhaps he wanted the stinkpots there to make his willy look bigger like the tavernas do in Puerto BAnus.

It seems to be only this one guy who is obnoxious..the Athena taverna.

Last night we spent anchored off in Mandraki bay round the corner....one of the most attractive anchorages we have ever been in.
We took the dink round at night to the town (5 mins) and had a meal at Billy's on the front. The best pork chop this side of Tel Aviv.

This morning we watched 2 turtles swimming round the boat,(they do nt like bread seemingly)

You actually threw bread into Kastellorrizon Harbour?* They would usually throw you into jail for less as they take great pride in the pureness of the water there.

That possession thing about various parts of the quay is experienced in quite a few Greek places, even if the tav. owner didn't actually provide the facility nor maintain it.

*Edit:Ah no! you were in the bay.

We used to charter boats in Greece and in Croatia and we would have restaurant representatives waving at us to park in front of their restaurant etc. We always thought that the polite thing to do was to have at least one meal at the restaurant where we berthed. Have things changed?

I think in fairness that if mooring up on a guy's/restaurant's doorstep, which is what you do in Kastellorizo, then it is reasonable for the restauranteur to expect you to dine with him for at least one meal. He does help you to secure your stern lines when med-mooring. A bit of quid pro quo is to be expected. The bollards to which you tie up are underneath or beside the guys dining tables. You won't get closer to your restaurant anywhere:-)

The food in Athena is excellent - give his lamb casserole a try: blooming magnificent. His seafood is also wonderful. Vagelis, the owner of Athena, can be a bit contrary which given that he is in the people business is a little unfortunate. He has always given us a welcome wine or beer when we've arrived - 3 times now. We've seen boats moor up, have lunch and then take off to anchor out in the bay many times. This year we moored at Athena for one night, and the following day and night anchored off Agios Georgios. If doing this and you want to swim, anchor to the west of the two little islands. The current on the eastern side is pretty strong. The anchorage is a delight.

We love Kastellorizo. It is definitely one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Symi is pretty wonderful also.

I have to ask if you read my initial posting

.
We did not want to moor at his restaurant in the first place. He told us that all the other places were reserved and the only place left was in front of his caff.
We did as he asked and moored in front of him,but he then became obnoxious because we ate somewhere else. His problem methinks.

We are back in Kastillorizon tonight and will be eating in the olive garden again.

As for being contrary..he is a psycho. We have seen how he reacts with other people not just us.
