Anyone know what happened?
We were coming up Channel on a cruise ship in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the ship manoeuvred to provide shelter for an SNCF helicopter to lift someone off a yacht. I was told the helo had come from Cherbourg and would guess (very roughly) that we were well offshore and somewhere west of the Solent

When did the French national railways start operating rescue helicopters?

Hang on a while- A yacht being hit by a ship in the channel could have been serious. It does happen with dire concequences. Fortunately not too often ( as far as I am aware) That being said I have had some near misses & not all my fault, I might add.
It would be nice to know what happened so one might actually learn from it- Assuming something can be learned
Is there any further info?

Not much really. From local articles, just that there were two persons onboard and their dog, all rescued.
Depending on news articles it s not even 100% clear where the collision happened, if inside Casquets TSS or just outside, in French the term ''rail'' is often used both with reference to the TSS (DST Dispositif de Separation du Trafic) and to the traffic lanes existing between two TSSs.

I guess we'll find out the detail at some point long in the future if there's a MAIB Report, which as I understand it depends on it being either in UK waters or a UK vessel involved.

The machine translation in my browser must be acting up, it was throwing out phrases like "on the outskirts and east of the freezer separation scheme for helmets." Or perhaps that's just French. Off to get a second opinion!

Well can someone make some up.
I feel summoned!

Best guess: yacht sees ship in distance, transmits "starboard!!" over the VHF, then goes below to have a nap.
Backup guess: yacht sees ship on screen, adds 20° to the autopilot to avoid, then goes below for their nap.

TSS or thereabouts recently seem to have become particularly dangerous places
