Channel Island 22 Performance

I hope someone can provide some information on performance of the Channel Island 22. I am looking to buy one which is fitted with twin Volvo 43 HP engines. What speed should I expect. I took her out today and got around 8 knots into tide and 10 knots down tide with the throttles to the stops. Only one rev counter worked which shown 2500 rpm. Does this see right? Any info greatly received.

I Owned a ci22 with 140 mermaid . This topped out at 18-19 knots. Although it's a semi displacement hull at full chat it rode on the stern trim plane quite high out of the water. It was only the last fifth of the throttle that would cause the speed to increase almost exponentially. You have only about half the power and twice the drag, probably as good as it's going to get.
By the way it wasn't particularly comfortable at this speed as it tended to keel ride, fine in the calm water on the Menai straits but a handful on the sea. Most of our cruising was done at 10 knots. Great boat though , a real tardis. The twin engine models are super manoeverable, the single had no steering in reverse. At displacement speed very capable.

Twin volvo engines are nice and quiet at low speeds, running on a single engine she tracks very well which we do quit often when fishing.
Speed wise you should achieve much more when we bought her she was covered in barnacles and muscles so we only achieved 10 knots due to the drag, I was amazed when we cleaned the hull how she came out of the water and cruised along very nicely at 17 knots this was not full speed however as we found that a cutlass bearing required replacement so we slowed down.

Were your Volvos 43hp? 17 knots + seems fast for a heavy 22 footer on shafts with only 86hp on tap. I would have though with these engine s the boat was really only suitable for displacement cruising and the 9 knots the op is getting would seem about right.

Edit: just realised that original post is over 4 months old. I guess the op has worked out the correct top speed by now.
 
To answer the rpm question first
No 2500 max does not seem right, I would think 3200 is acheivable
Having owned a single 140 turbo version I was interested when I took a friends Volvo twin out
Also in the Menai as per R400
The twin, it was a real nice example by the way, did 15 knts flat out with no tide
'Upsides' with the twin, easier to handle at slow speeds and easier to move about the boat
'Downsides' not as fast!
'Upsides' with the 140 turbo, quicker and easier to punch a strong tide
'Downsides' big engine box right in the way and noisier
The state of the 'bottom' will stop the engines reaching max rpm as you probably know
Plus, as we all know these boats are quite old now so there are lots of areas to consider the performance
Great little boats very seaworthy
Yes, the single engine version needs some thought during close quarter handling but they are predictable the prop wash will determine which way you are going in reverse but once mastered its ok
The twins are much more easy to reverse into a berth but that's the same with most vessels
 
Top
