Changing the name on a Part I registered boat

The V39 is Part I registered, and we wnat to change the name (already chosen the new one too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif). I have registered boats fresh on P1 but never bought a boat that is already on the list.

What is needed to change the name? And when changing the name, is it possible to change the port of registry of is that fixed?

I am sure this has been asked and answered before but the search is useless and I cant find anything.
 
Yes you can change. We did it on our last boat on purchase (it had a horrible name) and sale (we wanted to keep the new name) and also on our current boat to transfer the name from the old one. We also changed the Port of Registry of this one at the same time. You need to contact the Registration people in Cardiff I think and ask for the forms and to check if your chosen name is acceptable, if it is they will reserve it for you whilst the paperwork is done.

Yep, assuming its not coded then you just download the forms from the MCA web site, and send them off with a cheque. You can get 24hr turnaround if you want by paying extra £100, and marking the envelope and document with "Express Service".

If it is coded, then you need a Carving and Marking Survey, you have to get a surveyor to come to the boat and check you've marked the new name on the transom, and its the right size etc.

Finding an untaken name can be difficult. This website helps, if you enter the name you want and it comes up with a "g" against it, then there is a boat of that name with a VHF licence. It doesn't necessarily mean that boat is pt 1 registered, but if there's no "g", then you know the name is available.

just by typing my boats name I found my registration. (there is only a few with this name in Belgium). /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
My boat used to be on there last time I looked a couple of months back but I seem to have vanished now, what have I forgotten to do or register /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Did you try searching my MMSI rather than name? I couldn't find my boat by name to begin with but found her by MMSI. Seems they have listed her without a space in a "double-barrelled" type of name. ie Jigsaw vs Jig Saw (not her name incidentally!) but the search only looks for identical matches
 
Took them three months to change ours. They didnt look at the paperwork for the first six weeks, and sent it back because our middle names were not on the form but shown on the Bill of Sale. It was more complicated because were transferring ownership from the previous...... who were single when they bought the boat but married when they sold it to us. The Registry then wrote to say we had to get a copy of their marriage certificate .... from Spain.

When we had done all this, they queried our chosen port of registry.... which they could have done the first time, or even the second, if they had read the form properly form instead of stopping to address the above problems.

When we decided on a new port, they sent another form back which we had to sign to say we had put the lettering on the boat before we could proceed. It is on the boat .... just still in the packaging it arrived in.

It's quite simple really ...... just be patient about the crap approach to customer service. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
as mentioned above, you can get a 24 hr service, you just have to pay for it. I've used it and the service is very good. It's essential for med boaters or those who want to travel to France, who have to show their registration document when they visit another port/marina.
