I am going to view a boat soon with a 90hp Mercury 2 stroke. I think this will be a little under powered, and I always vowed to get a 4 stroke for my next boat to reduce the noise and fumes.

So if the boat stacks up, how easy is it likely to be to remove and sell the 2 stroke and buy and fit a second hand 4 stroke (about 120 -150 hp) or will it be more hassle than its worth, especially if they are different makes i.e. may go for a Honda as a replacement.

Cheers, Andy

v easy. your 90hp is a great trade in engine or would sell on boats and outboards/ ebay / gumtree etc. even better if it has a recent service receipt.

I would suggest you work out the maths i.e. hours used by x amount of fuel per hour = and then take 40% off if buying a Honda.

Oh be careful when buying as there are a lot of ex commercial ones around of that size with silly hours on them.

The change is 'bolt off-bolt on' + change of instruments and likely remote controlbox.

Value of the old motor is- you guessed it since you dont want it either - LOWer than the money you pay for a new(ish) 4-stroke of +50% power.

Get the max recommended hp for the boat and look up offers on your your preferred engine not less than 75% of the max. Should allow the boat to perform as designed to :)

If you asked me I'd say Suzuki but you didn't. Check service availability before brand - no good to have nearest service point too far away.

If the merc is a tower of power it will be in demand; people love em. Still not high price though. Maybe give the boat a blast with it before deciding; the inline 6 merc 90 is an awesome engine and feels way more powerful than the badge suggests, and would give a 120hp 4T a run for its money. And it sounds divine

+ 2 for the sound....

Hi

4 strokes as you will know are far better on fuel and even more so in eco mode i.e. like the honda which is around 50-80% of full throttle. Your Mercury is also a good 2 stroke engine and will be v easy to sell.

If you are looking at Honda please check the hours if second hand due to lots of ex commercial engines with silly hours on them around i.e. 3000 +. This is due to Honda offering a 2 year warranty for business use not the standard 1 that you get will all other outboard engines.

Have fun

Dave

Had a Merc 90 Tower on a Shetland 570. Was OK, loved rpm but not a preferred fit to a boat for puttering around.

Rather thirsty and not a fan of extensive idling either.

Completely opposite to modern 4-strokes.
