I have read all the posts on the forum regarding oil changing and as a result I bought a Pela vacuum pump.

I know that there is an oil extraction tube on the Volvo 2020 but I was wondering how important it is to use that tube instead of the dipstick tube? The dipstick tube is SO much more convenient to use having the opening at the top of the engine.

Using the thin, stiff tube that comes with the Pela if I used the dipstick tube would it reach to the bottom of the sump?

Use the extraction tube, just push vacuum pump tube firmly into opening of engine extraction tube. It wont reach the bottom, it doesn't need to.

Run engine up so oil nice and warm or you will be there all day!!

Funnily enough i'll be be doing the said same thing tomorrow for the umpteenth time on our 2030, using the same pump an all..

I've never had a problem using the oil extraction tube on the 2020/Perama. I just used a short length of suitable sized hose which was a tight fit on the tube, and then just used a normal sump pump. On a warm engine of course, so that the oil was easier to pump. Just remember to fit the rubber cap on the extraction tube and secure with a hose clip!

I've always used the dipstick tube on my 2020 - I didn't realise there is an oil extraction tube! I use a Pela and yes the tube does reach the bottom of the sump.
On my installation it's very difficult to see down that side of the engine, and it always seems impossible to avoid spilling loads of oil when unscrewing the filter. Why didn't they fit them vertically?? I'm going to try one of grand-daughter's disposable nappies (not when she's wearing it) stuffed under the filter this time. My fun and games on Monday, looking forward to it immensely I don't think.

DID IT!

Poked the tube from the Pela down the dipstick tube... extracted the warm oil beautifully!

I made a bit of a mess when I removed the filter though. I had read about putting a plastic bag around it but as soon as it was free it tipped down and deposited its contents on the bilge! It all mopped up OK though with rags and so no harm done. I would like to find a cleaner way of changing the filter though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for all your help.

There's a little trick told to me recently by John Cutler of Cutler Marine!

Run up the engine and warm the oil, then extract the oil from the dipstick as you've done - it's easier to get the Pela tube down than the dipstick tube than other one. Then leave the filter change until the next day, by which time the oil in the filter will be cold.

I tried this for the first time this weekend (2030) and it makes much less mess

Cheers John, owe you a pint

I would say try Tome's method and also a plastic bag. I have always used the plastic bag method and not made too much mess ... get the filter all the way inside the bag. I have to admit though that it was a tight squeeze getting your arms in around there on a Ben 311 !

I did try something else yesterday. I punched a hole in the top of the filter before starting to unscrew it. Then unscrewed it a half-turn hoping to drain the oil out of it into a small container. Trouble was I didn't research what size container would fit in the very small space beneath, so still made a mess.
I'm sure this would work if I'd prepared properly. Will try again next year!
