Pela is marvelous bit of kit. My neighbour filled his petrol Mercedes with diesel. Pela did the trick, even though it took 1/2 hour to get all the fuel out into jerry cans. My engine has a brass pump on the side but after it has expelled the oil, the Pela gets another litre out, which is below the intake of the brass pump.

What make is your engine - sounds like one to avoid. (Not wishing to sound dis-respectful)

My Beta has a pump connected to the sump.Very effective and it can't cost a fortune to adapt a sump plug to take a fitting.

In my opinion, the Beta sump pump on my BZ482 is one of the best bits of work beta did in marinising it. It's a lovely brass pump with a proper sealed end cap and a valve between it and the sump. It works extremely well.
I am slightly less impressed with their efforts on the engine elsewhere however!

agree about the pump on the beta - if only they'd do something about the coolant drain blocking! but i have a Seago 6 litre pump that was recomended as best on test by PBO and although i don't change engine oil with it, i bought it for gearbox oil changes and its great for other liquids such as water that the bilge pump can't get at. i used to use one of the little brass bodied ones to change the oil on the old boat, but this is much better. at around £27 its well worth it.

I have to do this job next week. First time for me. I was planning on getting the oil warm and then setting up a syphon. I have a deep bilge.
Does this not work?

I use an old outboard motor fuel hose, the type with a squeezey priming ball pump in the middle. I used an old length of thin copper tube (old gas line) to poke down the dipstick hole, stuck the cut off hose onto it, then simply pumped it out into an old oil container.

Cost free:) All parts loafing around in my boat stuff:) I only have to store a very small coil of hose:)

Stupid, stupid...

For two seasons I used one of the stupid brass pumps, oil everywhere. This time I looked under the sump and found plenty of room to get an old ice cream tub under the engine and do a normal oil change! No mess. Anyone want to buy a stupid little brass pump? So, always worth checking before
You start sucking!

+1
You can also use the Pela to sample/remove whatever is at the bottom of your fuel tank. Water or sediment spring to mind. Had I known what was at the bottom of mine

I would have cleaned it out before I did. It isn't the bottom of a holding tank - it just looks like one..!
