I am struggling to get someone to Change oil and filter on our Volvo HS80AE gearboxes. Any one done one themselves who could give me few pointers/tips please? Looks quite straight forward but I am not too mechanically minded.
Thanks. Neil

These would usually be changed as part of the annual service, can't the same person do it then?

As said all part of a full service , the one you asked me about. Get it wrong it will screw up the clutches, why not pay a pro to look after a 300k plus boat than risk damage yourself.

This is a very easy job, Neil....all you have to do is remove the oil filter, which is located on the top of the gearbox, starboard side, then carefully insert the thin suction pipe from a vacuum oil extraction pump into the centre hole of the oil filter housing until it touches the bottom of the gearbox, and then pump the vacuum pump to extract the oil.

Refilling the new oil is also done through the oil filter housing, after which fit your new filter, and resecure the filter top.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for replies.

Aquapower we have just had service but they didn't have time for gearboxes.

Volvo Paul unfortunately no engineers are available in area at present. PM sent

Allan G I will give it a go if I cant get anyone cheers

Brgds Neil

Did you ever figure anything out? I am looking to change the oil and filter on mine. Looking for Volvo part #s for oil and filter and any tips/tricks. Thank you.

As stated very easy to do yourself, just be careful when tightening down the filter cover, you need to press the cover down firmly so when the O ring expands it seals against the sides of the hole instead of squeezing upwards and lifting the cover with it. Check that the cover is secure and won’t rotate afterwards, or it can lose the oil under way.

I think the filter is part # 3582069 and looks like they do indeed take Dexron III ATF (Volvo part #1161995 / 85122800)

Can I use the reverso pump that I will be using for the oil change? Do I just suck out the transmission fluid out and then connect it to the suction pipe at the bottom of the housing which should be 5/8" outer diameter? Or do I get a smaller tube and stick it down into the reservoir? Any idea how I prevent contamination from using the same Reverso pump on the main engine oil change?

I can't see how you will prevent contamination using a reverso pump or why you would take the risk, if in doubt I would get done by someone who knows, new gearboxes are not cheap!!!

Is there a solution that I can run through the pump and tubing to clean it out in between uses? Is Dawn soap sufficient?

Hi Mystery. VPs solution best. If in doubt and not very mechanical minded get someone who knows what they are doing to sort it as part of service schedule.

Thank you and Happy New Year! I ordered their ATF, filter, a reverso pump, will clean it out with diesel then dawn soap if any other solution goes through it first, but trying to figure out the best way to drain. The manual says to suck out solution and then attach to the 5/8" OD port at the bottom of the reservoir, from the top. Just want to confirm there is nothing else that needs to be opened to allow it to be pumped and no way to drain from the bottom?
