On the suggestion of Kim the other day, I tried downloading Firefox to try with Scuttlebutt- it really is a good browser and well worth a look. It's at http://mozilla.org/products/firefox

I have no connection, but was really quite impressed.

i'm currently using it after a hijack attack. it doesn't have the same loopholes as IE but it is a bit buggy. it takes five times as long to load, the caret keeps vanishing and i can't keep 2 hotmail IDs open at the same time as I could in IE. it seems to benefit from the 'it's not microsoft so it must be good' syndrome.

I have no particular dislike of Microsoft , just found this browser good for the forum on my setup at home. the work system was not quite so keen on it.

Which version are you using.? It is a pre-release product after all, and they do make that clear on the website, so got to expect some bugs. However, it shouldn't be taking longer to load than IE, and I have to say I haven't experienced any bugs since 8, and it's now on 10

im running 9.3 under win98 on an old clunker (400mhz). for those with shiny multi-gigahertz machines the speed issue won't be significant but vanishing carets are a bit basic in the testing department.

Thanks Odraht. Snowleopard- I didn't realize how clunky my old machine ( 450MHz and 128RAM) was until I got my new one 2 years ago with 512RAM and 2GHz processor and that's slow now!! Certainly a lot of modern applications are becoming more and more processor and RAM intensive, especially when running at the same time. Go on- treat yourself- it's cheaper than a new boat.

Agreed - it is a very goog product (the same technology as in Netscape, but seems to work better). I can also recommend their mail/news program.

Both easier to use and more secure than MS equivalents

Updated I Explorer some time ago ...

It never downloaded anything after that. Of course being Microsoft - it being integrated into ops system - I couldn't remove the bloody thing.

So downloaded Netscape 7.1 ...... installed it and allowed it to be default. Now I know what I was missing !!! Only complaint I have is the graphic viewer is crap, so defaulted back to Kodak Imaging ..... now I'm happy !!

I have been using Mozilla for about 6 months now V09.3 very few problems. Sometimes have to revert back to IE when on the Microsoft sites for so downloads.

Would recommend that everyone at least tries it.

I use both IE and Firefox and have no real preference for one over the other (but there again I don't suffer from a hate fetish for Bill G). Everyone is familiar with IE so I'll only comment on Firefox - I find it a bit "clunky" but as Brendan says it is still in Beta, I find the favorites/bookmarks management not to be as straightforward as IE (I feel a bit the same about management of downloads), and the various options are much more limited (that may be a beta thing too).

I do not find Firefox any faster than IE, and in some circumstances (eg on first displaying a long thread) maybe slower.

Not knocking it, as I say I use both equally happily - just would not say that it is the ship's cat's pyjama's as some seem to get carried away with thinking.

I find firefox is much faster downloading, but that's cos I can't get broadband - it's way better for people on slow connections. I do like it's integrated download management (if you download a big file, it takes up where it left off, which normally you need a download manager for)

It's better at general internet browsing, and not so good at forum browsing, as it wants to reload everything if you back space

The extensions you can download can be excellent.
Biggest downside is that some sites that have been tweaked for IE won't run at all. This includes Microsoft website support features.

Like you, don't have a preference, and use both where they have an advantage

Thanks for the comment Brendan - I have not used it on dial up and can certainly appreciate the ability to pick up later from a partially completed download under those circumstances.

It seems to manage the list of past sites/pages better. Why does it have such a small box to enter Google search text in (top right hand screen)? or am I missing something?

I wonder if others would be prepared to comment on speed against IE for their case of either broadband or dial up?

I have both Firefox & IE on broadband & don't use Firefox. I find the initial start-up is very slow & loading pages seems to take a lot longer than IE.

Too be honest, startup time must be very dependent on what configuration you have. Firefox on most computers will load much faster, and download faster too. That's the whole point of having a browser which is much smaller in file size, and designed to be more efficient at both.

What operating system and computer are you running?

Firefox on that box should both load and download quicker than IE

If it's not doing so, you probably have a general speed problem. It should be way faster

Me transmitte sursum, caledoni

That's what I thought as well.
on (for example) www.o2.ie Firefox is so slow that I can see the text behind the graphics as it loads. IE doesn't have that problem.
May be there is something I'm missing, I just downloaded Firefox and used it without changing any settings, should I have changed something?
Have just seen there is an update available (I'm running 0.9 (One Tree Hill). will download it, may speed things up.

Brendan, just downloaded Firefox 1.0. Speed problems solved, it is so much quicker than the previous release. Will use this now
