I have 2 x Ford Sabre 212c. One of them has just lost the big end bearings (due to the driver...not me... not spotting a leaking oil pipe from the turbo for over a week! I am faced with fixing this old engine or upgrading. Financially, although this is a big expense, this is my most reliable option as I use the boat to ferry scuba divers to and from a wreck site in Cyprus. I have been told that I can fit Perkins 200 (or 220hp) turbo diesels and the gearbox connections will be the same so I won't have to buy that part of the engine and also not replace the shafts.
Any advice? In Cyprus they'll tell you anything to get a hefty deposit then you're in trouble if things aren't what they seemed. Also any advice on what size engine. I prefer perkins as they have a reliability record. Anyone know of 2 new or nearly new, bargains anywhere. Appreciate help as I am not mechanically experienced (ex-PTI Army:)

Why not give Mermaid Marine a ring, they marinise Ford engines much the same as Perkins used to. Ask to speak to Cyril (the boss), I have a mermaid and have always found them extremely helpful and non pushy. Tel 01202 891824. Their service is also excellent.

SABRE 225

I have a Sabre M225Ti in my boat, its the perkins phaser block, although badged and marketed as a 225hp its really 205, its the same across the range, I think there is a commercial version of the engine called M215 or something which might suit your needs, but check the rating as it might not be 215hp. look on the perkins website http://www.perkins-sabre.com

From a personal experience point of view, mine makes no smoke, requires no oil top ups and does not leak, it always starts first press of the button and runs like a dream, it is 7 years old and has covered on 600 hrs. I am thoroughly impressed by it.

Suggest contacting the Fairey Owners Club (don't know their website - if any - try a google) as most ? all Spearfishes had the 180 or 212 Ford engines and I would suspect many have been reengined by now. Not sure about the older wooden models ? some anyway had 165 Perkins. I've seen a couple of Faireys advertised with 225's so they may be what burgundyben has. I bow to his superior knowledge of their true HP rating.

Why?

if comparing like for like, why choose ford? Dorset vs T6.354 or Dovertech vs Phaser? both comparisons are of similar age, what are the pro's and cons and why prefer ford ?

I have no opinion, only that dead impressed wiv mine, just interested to know why you say stick wiv ford.
