Oh, it is really easy to ensure that Poseidon is content with this change:

You get a virgin to pee in your bilges and then you flush a good bottle of Champagne after it. Complete the ceremony with another bottle of Champagne against your bow with the naming statement and the wishes for fair winds across the seven oceans.

That's it!

Any other name change procedure is expected to ensure bad luck for the ship. This is part of a very strong naval superstition tradition and it has survived through the centuries. I would not challenge it.

Good luck finding a virgin!

Curious though that any commercial vessel over 10 years old will have had 3 or 4 or more name changes in her working life!

However, for more info about the whole scenario: http://www.marinegraphics.com/recboats.html

and for the CORRECT ceremonial for re-naming: http://www.bitwrangler.com/wt/renaming.shtml

As to legalities, you really do need to find those registration papers, if you wish to continue with registration, find out whether she is Part 1 registered or SSR, and do the paperwork accordingly. If you dont the registration will lapse in due course anyway, but from what you say, that doesnt matter.

Part 1 registration is quite expensive (for a bit of paper), but does prove legal title to the boat for overseas and marine mortgage purposes. SSR doesnt do anything except gratify the continentals love of paperwork.

As for me, I just get the lettering, stick it on, and off I go! Only lost one boat so far, and that was the 1987 Hurricane so I wasnt the only one that night!

In view of the importance of retaining evidence of VAT - paid status, make sure that if you do change the name, your trail of proof is still unbroken.
