Changes to Uk boat fuel

Sorry for resurrecting this thread, it seems we are going to get lo-Sulphur with no bio additives.

I have started a new thread on PBO as it affects all boaters in the UK.

Nick,

At best it appears that you are being slightly disingenuous at worst you are talking out of both sides of your mouth.

Only a few weeks ago you were claiming nothing changes, 1000 ppm A2 gas oil.

However life as we know it HAS changed, after your constant rebuttal of the move to effectively zero sulphur fuel (10 ppm) is a fait accompli. I await the interpretation of stake holder’s representations to DfT last Friday.

However the BIG issue was problem of the definition ‘Inland Waters’

IMO have a different perspective to SOLAS which designates such areas the Solent an ‘Inland Waters’. Therefore making it a market predominantly restricted to BS2869 A2 same as road fuel to BS EN 590.

At last Wednesdays Fuel Forum representatives of the fuel distribution industry claimed it would prove impractical to distribute gas oil which was anything other than downgraded road fuel to BS EN 590.

Rather than lead boaters up the garden path, it is now a given, despite your earlier protestation fuel IS going to be effectively sulphur free.

Alan Cartwright of the PLA has pulled something off, however without the official view of DfT we cannot be sure. The position of the fuel distribution industry was as of last Wednesday that you will get downgraded BS EN 590 fuel. I will publish exactly what was agreed last Fridays stakeholder meeting.

In the meantime I believe any smart boater should assume he or she is getting a fuel which is fundamentally BS EN 590 road fuel and follow the necessary precautions.

Nick no winners here; I would suggest that you book yourself into one of the regional Fuel Forums as it is an absolute offence for a supplier to supply fuel NOT complying with the directive. Also remember that if you have bona fide SOLAS customers for Class D Gas oil watch out! If you supply A2 Gas oil instead of D the flash point is 50/55 degrees and NOT 60 degrees you could end up with Trading Standards on your tail.

Steady on Latestarter, all I have done is post a link to a press release - what is disingenuous about that, I dont know.

The press release indicates that fuel for marine use will not have the bio content that this thread was so concerned about, not the sulphur content. I bow to your superior detailed knowledge and industry involvement. However, you continue to encourage boaters "to follow the necessary precautions", which can be very expensive, when all other indications are that these precautions won't actually be necessary!!

As I have tried to make clear before, what the refineries produce, the wholesalers deliver and the retailers actually sell is what really matters.
