Guess this is a question for anyone currently in Gibraltar or has been doing research on moving there . . .

Having spent a fair amount of time considering, and researching moving to Gibraltar later this year and emailing countless gov departments to try to get some answers, I'm not getting very far. Lots of promises of emails back but very little actually coming through so thought I would reach out to treasure trove that this this forum :)

During my research I found the following statement on the Gov website - "His Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar confirms that, after discussions with the Civil Status and Registration Office, they will lift the instruction which was previously issued which meant that residency was not being granted to anyone who lived on a vessel. Subject to individuals meeting the relevant criteria (and information being provided to HMGoG by the Marinas), HMGoG will revert to the previous practice of permitting vessels to be used to prove residency."

I'm wondering what "Subject to individuals meeting the relevant criteria (and information being provided to HMGoG by the Marinas" means. I am assuming that it is a 1 year mooring lease/agreement and the usual details to obtain an ID card such as birth certificate, passport etc. etc. I have asked 2 of the marina's and they don't appear to know :)

If anyone has any insight, would greatly appreciate it . . . .

You're probably right, a one year marina contract was enough for Portugal, mind that was before the end of the Brexit transition period. The marinas wouldn't necessarily know this.

A total aside but the one thing I had difficulty with was the NIF, couldn't get that because of covid so I failed in the end to get the initial 5 year temp residency for Portugal. I'm not bitter...

Best of luck with your plans...

Get use to no one knowing anything or doing anything in Gibraltar! Laziness and not being customer/user focussed is the cultural norm....there are exceptions of course. I've spent a year there. Unless you work and pay the relevant taxes in Gib, or don't work and are very wealthy, or on a UK state and private pension, you won't get residence - you just stay there as visitor.

We set up a business in Gib and lived there for a number of years. You can fight your own battles probably without much joy or contact one of a number of small firms that specialise in this. We used Formaco and got to know them well. Reasonable rates.

We lived on our yacht all the time we were there and had Temporary Resident Status.

As always, ask the people who advise this stuff for their own living!! Good luck, we were there on and off for a lot of years and had a blast. :D

I think you will want to leave after a year.
I was there for three weeks back in the early eighties. Two weeks too many. Bank screwed up the transfere for the boat work. After you have seen the mainstreet, the old fortifications and walked the ridge, that's about it. Border was closed too then, so could't nip into spain.
