Please be advised that a new anchoring exclusion zone is in force north of Arbatax, Sardinia and now extends to a radius of 1.5NM (previously 0.5NM) from the light on the end of the sea wall. According to the local Caribinieri a new ordinance (Ufficio Circulation Arbatax 35/2015 dated 15/6/15) is being enforced. On Sunday 9th August 2015, Takamoana (and 3 other yachts) were fined with no warning for anchoring in a restricted zone. Takamoana was anchored at least 600 yards outside what we believed was the prohibited zone described in UK Notices to Mariners 4035/2012 (Italian Notice 15.12/12) and until fined , unaware of the new ordinance.

Not sure about the bay to the south, we only anchored to the north. As far as the ordinance, it only states that anchoring is not allowed within 1.5 NM of the red light on the end of the new sea wall. Looking at the chart, the area encompasses the whole of Cala Morisca and almost all of Porto Frailis. When asked where it was permitted to anchor, the caribinieri officer indicated that N of the second stone wall at the entrance to the lagoon was ok but as it is only about 0.6NM from the red light, we elected to go further north.

Hi Gary.
Thanks for the heads-up. We expect to be there at least once later this year, so your experience is invaluable to us. Only sorry it was costly for you. Out of interest, can you let us know how costly?
Very best wishes to you and L.

It's quite a few years since were there but from memory needing to be 1.5 km away would move you outside any shelter provided by the promontory. seems a very strange and largely unnecessary restriction.

FWIW we were stopped when cruising past Arbatax last year by a Guardia Finanzia patrol boat based in Arbatax and detained for more than an hour wallowing about in a choppy sea. What they were looking for I have no idea given that we are a British flagged boat owned by Brits but the officers were curt and unfriendly. That experience alone made me never want to go near the place again

The fine was 100 Euro, the caribinieri was ever so sorry but only doing his job etc etc..... Yes 1.5 NM takes you out of the bit of protection from SE afforded by the mole. FWIW the Isola dell'Ogliastra provide some shelter from the N or SE but the space is limited and the bottom is weedy and not always good holding. We were originally anchored at 39 56.7901 N 09 41.4809 E.
