I'm considering offering a chandlery service where we will keep records of vessels and equipment and source spares in the event of failiure/breakdown and send them straight to your boat wherever you are in the world. Would anyone be interested in a service like this. As a regular service, carriage costs would obviously be reduced. We would source the best prices on the owners behalf.

It is interesting, but the UK is ofter the most expensive chandlery.

As for shipping the prices vary widely, This spring as i had to ship from the UK i was happy to be given the address of a first class shipper at the lowest rates i will ask pragmatist again as my link was lost when my laptop crashed.

There exists already such a chandlery, they have a huge stock use phone fax email or skype !!!and ship to where you are they are:

Yacht parts in Plymouth were offering something similar where you gave them a list of every motor/pump/gadget/winch/cooker/toilet etc on the boat they would then source the manuals and parts lists for each item and keep it on file, so you just e-mail something like "new forward shower pump seal please" and you get the right bit for your particular pump. Sounded like a good service, but in the end I was in a hurry to leave and didn't get around to giving them a list.

The only problem I can see is that West Marine really offer just that - most cruising boats carry a west marine catalogue. After I was robbed by pirates in the gulf of aden I got into Djubiti - looked up all the items to replace - ssb, vhf, binoculars etc and emailed West Marine and had them 7 days later at prices lower than UK.... Suspect that is the catch 22 with your idea...

regards

Michael
