Well if you not seen the news yet the chandlers have been paraded in a video on the BBC

First the RN abandon them ( standing by and doing nothing ) then the British government
( spout out they c**p (we do not make substantive concessions to hostage takers) are we now the British people going to abandon them too by standing by and let this go on any longer ??? .

would you see someone drowning and do nothing ?

How about someone who know how it work get a petition going come on Yachting monthly Help …..before it too late .

Someone on here could fix this

The Chandlers say they may be dead within a week.

I understand the pirates only want £100k.

There must be someone on here who can put that up, but it needs to be done QUICKLY. I will contribute to a post-freedom fund to recompense the original ransomer, and I am sure many others will as well - but the original hand in pocket needs to come NOW.

So come on wealthy Scuttlebutters - one of you put your money where our mouth is.

Chandlers lives threatened

Tough call. How much more attractive will private yachts become to pirates if a ransom is paid?

Agreed ... This has the makings of a tragedy, innocent couple caught up in criminal activity. But the consequences of handing over a ransom could result in no-go zones for any small boats ,not only in E Africa but anywhere in the world.
Surely the UK Special Forces have been alerted to the situation & could carry out a rescue attempt? Risky, yes but may be the only solution.

There's no time

.
There is simply no time for YBW or any other organsation to get something together. To make sure the Chandlers are released a private individual needs to come up with £100,000 in the next week and get it to the pirates - it is as simple as that. Any further delay risks the Chandlers being shot.

Now, I don't know how much money I would need to have before I would personally feel comfortable with shelling out £100K I might never see again to save the lives of a couple of elderly yachties I don't know, but if I had a million lying around in accessible cash I probably would. Very hypothetical in my case. However, I reckon there may well be people with that sort of money available reading this, so for them it is a real decision.

They need to put up the money now and collect to be reimbursed later. No time to form a committee or set up a charity.

If someone on here does this I will pledge £100 towards the reimbursement fund, but I am not giving money to some sort of half-arsed committee of well-meaning but ineffectual wellwishers when it will almost certainly arrive too late.

L`escargot is absolutely right....pay up, and potentially all our lives are at risk.....and piracy will blossom like cancer... and possibly much nearer to home than Somalia.

It IS a tough call......but... giving into bullies is exactly what SHOULDN`T be done.......

And remember.......Inside every bully there is a wimp....

Easy to be tough from here

Easy for you to say from behind your desk - would you be prepared to be a martyr to preserve our freedoms, or would you prefer it if someone ransomed you?

I can't help thinking your response would be less trite if it was you and your wife held at gunpoint in a squalid room in East Africa paralysed by the stench of your own fear.

we give up to bullies when the RN turned thier back on these couple .
yes it is a tough call
and I agree paying up may not alway be the answer but it may be the only chance they have of coming out of this alive .

The Chandlers aside, if any Navy patrolled 500 or 600 miles off Somalia, with their powerful radars and helicopters, and found a 25ft Dory with a huge outboard a few 45 gallon drums of petrol on board, not to mention armaments, isnt their intentions quite clear? Find something like that and just take it out. Take it out BEFORE they have a chance to find a "prize"

Surely it's not beyond any Navy nowadays to find these b*****ds whilst they are offshore and blow them away. They represent a threat.

I sympathise with these people's plight and I find the navy's behaviour in this matter beyond excuse, but...

WTF were these people thinking :confused::confused:
What were they even doing in that part of the world - surely they must have been aware of the piracy risk.

Even, then - according to reports - they were both below decks when they were boarded. If you are foolish enough to go there, a sharp look-out would have been essential.

I feel for the family, but I also think that you have to face the consequences of your actions (however stupid)

Its only due to the weakness of other Governments and private companies that the piracy is now escalated to present levels.

They knew the risks and took their chances.

What I would support is taking off the kid gloves and allowing the coalition forces to take a much more active role.

I have to admit if I were in that position I would be desperately hoping that someone would pay up for me.
