Chain

You have left yourself open for a lot of silly answers...

...It's about as long as a piece of string.

The measurement you need is the diameter of the metal that is used to make up the link.

chain is made from steel rod. You measure the diameter of the rod, not the length or width of each link. Most boats will use chain of about 8 to 12 mm.

Many thanks for the replies. I will check mine this week. As a follow-up do you know of a list of anchorplait to chain sizes?

To fit the winch use:-

16mm Octoplait with 8mm chain
20mm with 10mm chain and, I presume
24mm with 12mm chain

Though I don't know anyone with boats using 12mm chain - you're into superyacht category.

In terms of strength the Octoplait is way overspecified and I use 12mm with 7mm chain on my two kedges.

And if you don't measure the length of each link you will quickly discover that there are several different link lengths. The two most prominent are DIN and ISO and one will not run through a gypsey designed for the other!
