Why then do they sell crap links in chandler's, before I posted this I popped into force4 on the way home and got another one just the same, as vyv cox has now explained it does look to be made badly, even the guy who sold it to me said 'we don't recommend them' ?

Don't ask us

Ask the chandler.

And

Find a new chandler.

This seems to undermine the constant criticism of those who buy mail order.....under the banner of 'support your local chandler'

Just brought some shackles. On line .

I'm not sure where you are based but the recommendation for shackles has consistently been

Crosby G209A shackles

that you can buy 'mail order' in the UK (I buy them from the UK - mail order)

Shackles will not pass through a windlass gypsy.

If we take a 3/8th" shackle - most such shackles that you buy in your hardware store are probably marked WLL 1t. Many of them are untested but are probably a great buy....
.... to secure a dog.

Green Pin shackles from Van Beest are probably the best you can get made in Europe (I stand and am happy to be corrected). Using that 3/8th" size they are fully tested and I'd guarantee they will meet the 1t WLL. CMP's Titan brand Yellow Pin shackles have the same 1t rating and of the ones I have tested are good quality. The only better shackles are from the US (for example Crosby) or Taiwan. and they make a different specification shackle with a WLL of 2t. Buying 'better' is important if its for an anchor as if the shackle locks up strength drops by 50% which drops the WLL below, markedly, that of a matching for size, 8mm, G30 chain.

CMP Titan market another brand, their Black Pin shackles but these, though marked 2t WLL are 2t short tons - which may not matter - but it seems questionable ethics too sell an Imperial specification in a Metric market and, sorry - but I believe ethics are important for safety components - and you can easily buy Crosby shackles. Crosby shackles are well tested, as have Black Pin shackles but these latter tests simply raised questions, for example selling a short ton shackle in a metric market.

And I have tested a number of Black Pin and Yellow Pin shackles.

Take care, stay safe

I know they wont go round the windlass but its hand cranked and 20mts in which is only used in extreme conditions. I got some galvanized shackles from Jimmy green's that will do away with the stainless

My memory is failing and the UK distributor I use was on the tip of my tongue but.......

You can buy Crosby shackles and their 'C' link from Tecni in the UK. I use Tecni as they will send ordinary air-parcel which is much cheaper than courier. I am sure there are other suppliers but I know of none - and being lazy stick to what I know. There are suppliers in Oz but their prices are higher than Tennis.

Gunnebo the Scandinavian lifting chain and component manufacturer was taken over by Crosby about 12 months ago. There was an intention to build on the bigger company and develop some synergy - the implication being that Gunnebo stockists might also stock Crosby components - if you have a local distributor of Gunnebo product - they might offer a service.

Stainless Steel Wire Rope - Fittings - Tools - TECNI

I have just seen that you can get stainless steel versions Split Connecting Chain Link - Stainless Steel | S3i Group yes, I know they do not come with a certified breaking load but I guess neither did your rusty one.

As you can read on my website the stainless steel ones failed at about 50% of the MBL of the chain. The unnamed chandlery bought ones were somewhat worse. This is only what might be expected when selecting a material with the same UTS as the chain wire and roughly halving its area. The only answer is to increase the material strength, which is what Crosby and others do.

Thanks all . The crosby links are unavailable at the moment so I've opted for 2 good quality galvanised shackles. Will have to wiggle it round the windlass but it will be following a good night's sleep

Another supplier of a high tensile link is West Marine in USA. Last time I looked the link was quite cheap but shipping was $70! Might be worth a look in case things have changed for the better.

For a Crosby 'C' link - if you know anyone in the US - get them to buy one for you. They are hardly heavy and rather than fudge get them to put in a decent envelope and post it.

I find it annoying that too many people think the only way to send items internationally - is by (expensive) courier - what his wrong (in this case) with US Post.

At last someone gives good advice!

I prefer to give explanation and background to my advice. Sorry you see that as ramblings.
I get the same enthusiastic responses - people complain I'm too wordy. It seems people still like to read your and my posts - which must mean they find them interesting as reading is voluntary - but then complain.

Its a funny world we live in.
