Read article in PBO while back about using bike speed or pedometer to measure amount of chain deployed and amount recovered via electric windlass.
Has anyone tried this and if so any guidance as to which product to buy.
Thanks

Pretty much most of the usual Cateyes and suchlikes will work- they have a sensor with a Hall-effect unit for the front fork, and the receiver has a facility whereby you set the circumference of the wheel. Each count then knocks the mileage up by the preset increment.
I foresee that the 250-odd mm of chain each revolution of the gypser would give may be too small for the settings of Cateyes (I know mine would be), but other brands might be different.

Using that method it will only count in one direction which may be OK for you.

The chain counter I am fitting counts both up and down and can be configured for both chain only orl chain/rope setups together with settings for various chain and chain wheel sizes.
