I had my mast re-rigged by Aladdin's Cave in Bursledon. The new spinnaker hallyard has chafed through after 3 months!! It seems to be catching on a gap between the spreaders and the mast - do you reckon I should get a free replacement?! The spreaders were also overhauled (by a different company)
 
Sounds like the fault of whoever overhauled the spreaders... anyway I'd be more concerned about the integrity of the mast supports than the halyard.... I'd get it checked, quick.
 
They have agreed to replace said item FOC - result! They also said to keep them away from the spreaders at all times (so why did they not do that when they stepped the mast?!). I have now shackled one to the pulpit and the other down the mast centre-line
 
This is a joke surely.

Sounds like a lack of due diligence on the part of an owner.

Boats move, so do bits of the rig, and the wind makes things bang around, so things chafe....

Why not go the whole hog and sue someone for a new halyard because you hadn't inspected the rig in 3 months, and the guy who worked on the spreaders assuming the halyards would be tied away from the mast like most people do to prevent chafe.

Oh and sue someone for the halyards wearing the anodising of your mast while you're at it, oh and for the sea not being flat and for the wind blowing.

Jees...the world of the consumer is changing....
 
Quite frankly had it been me who supplied the halyard I'd have said no, you look after your own running rigging, it's your own fault. There was no fault with the rope supplied, I think you've got a cheek actually! IMHO

...'cos I sometime take beginners out with me I'm gonna see if i can get my foresail sheets changed for free.

I got both in blue, but I feel one green and one red would aid a beginner learning which side is which.

I've only used them a few times and they will be a common length for someone else to use, or could be cut down a bit by the riggers for a smaller yacht.

My boat is 26 years old and I replaced the Halyards a couple of years ago, none of which had chafed their way trhough anything.
Maybe I should sue because I did not have something to complain about?
 
3 months - your taking the piss mate and ripping a small family business off due to your own fault.
Running rigging is your own problem, if your to lazy to make sure it doesnt catch, then you will have to pay.

How can you rip someone of like this?
 
I think there must be a sharp edge chaffing your halyards.3 months of normal chaffing shouldnt have wrecked them.

On cruising boats halyards can last for decades.

You definitely need to get the spreaders checked for any sharp bits.Your Genoa may be the next casualty.
 
I find some of the comments a little harsh..
1 I do not expect others to pay for my incompetence
2 The riggers replaced all standing/running rigging and stepped the mast and I think they should be expected to make sure the hallyards are safely fastened.
3 I don't inspect the rigging every time I go out and this was the first time I used (or tried to) the spinny
4 It's my first season with this boat
