Phil,

Yes - wm.solent@mcga.gov.uk

(Format works for any MRCC - e.g. wm.XXXXXX@mcga.gov.uk - the wm bit stands for watch manager, it's a generic email address).

That sounds at first to be an excellent idea: no need for you to clutter up the airwaves, they don't need to actually read it, yet if you put your MMSI or callsign as the title they can find it quickly if they need to.

However all this passage plan business does not address changes of plan. I have many times set off "from A towards B" and ended up at C, D or E, sometimes 100 miles plus away from the original destination, for very sound safety and/or comfort related reasons.

It doesn't work quite like that, but it does mean its a simple cut and paste from the email system into the working log.

Change of destination for passage plans is never an issue - just call us and tell us where you actually ended up just as you would have done if you'd arrived at the first planned destination.

I believe the Irish CG have an app for reporting passage plans.

Sorry to change the subject slightly, but is there anyway yachts can use the AMVER system or something similar on long passages?

Thanks Channel Yacht.

I have added the email and phone number for Solent CG into my mobile. Sending a pp by email when I am going out of the Solent seems like a good idea to me.

BTW I think its great that you spend time on here. I hope you get recognition from your bosses for the time and energy you put in and i can say for one that it does make a difference.

AMVER is a very different beast - run by the USCG, it's aim isn't to provide a passage planning system, it's to provide SAR authorities with a "surface picture" of available vessels likely to be in the area of a distress incident - as per the MSC Flaminia.

That picture is only available to SAR agencies.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I got the impression Wadget was asking whether yachts can register themselves as potential sources of assistance, rather than receive shipping information for their own safety.

I assume the relative speeds of ships and yachts make the latter somewhat irrelevant for offshore rescue purposes in most areas.

I'm no expert on AMVER (I'll ask Falmouth when I get a minute) but I'm pretty certain it's commercial shipping only.
