Cetol Thinners

According to the product data sheet for Cetol Marine the correct material to use is "Sikkens Yachtpaints Oplosser".
Now WTF that is I have no idea. I cannot find it in any Sikkens product list so cannot find a Safety Data Sheet which would give some indication of its composition.

The safety data sheet for the Cetol marine shows that it contains several hydrocarbon solvents, the major one being naphtha.

Personally I would not hesitate to use white spirit for degreasing the wood before coating and is in fact what I did use.

Is there any reason why you are considering acetone?

I am not aware of any of the common thinners being based on acetone (propanone) although some, for the Interspray products, do contain butanone and higher ketones.

Just that I saw this:
Oh you cannot rely on what people say on boating forums :D

Use what the coating manufacturer recommends.

White spirit worked for me. Use acetone if you have any but be sure it really has evaporated before applying the coating.

What the French call "alcohol a bruler" is a good neutral cleaner.
Ethanol or methanol, not sure which.
It is the cleaner of choice of pro painters and varnishers in the Med for one pot stuff.

Chris

Acetone Danger

If acetone fumes are inhaled by a person who is intoxicated by alcohol the results are supposed to be fatal. Would any forumite with a medical or chemical background care to comment upon this? I understand acetone was used in the dry cleaning industry many years ago and I was told of a fatality resulting from these circumstances.

regards to all,

regards to all,

Well, from personal experience I can assure you it isn't fatal.
Unless I am a figment of my own imagination :)
Cheers,
