Mixed information on chatering in Greece, from 2 people with practical sailing certificates, to just providing a sailing resume. 2 weeks to the start of booked holiday, and suddenly we need certificates. What is requirement?
More and more charter companies are starting to ask for an ICC.
I have heard many different stories of what is required. What your told here in the UK when you book is not always the same that you find when out there.
I would try my hardest to get a contact phone number for the team that will be doing the meet and greet and safety brief, over there and ask them. They will be the guys who would know.
Ever thought that they might be on a scam to provide you with a skipper, at a price of course.
I recommend that you contact Melody, she owns and runs a charter company in Greece'ish way. You'll find her on here somewhere, she gives great help and advice.
The skipper usually needs an ICC and it appears to be well recognised in Greece. Some charter companies will accept resumés and other 'proof of competancy'
It depends on the chartering company. I have normally been asked to fill in a form asking for various information such as sailing experience skippering, boat ownership and any RYA certificate copies. I have never found out what the minimum requirement is. They normally are experienced enough when they go through the charter boat brief to know whether you capable or not. The general standard of sailing ability I have seen isn't necessarily that high.
sailing holidays asked for experience, as it happens ive got day skipper converted to ICC by the RYA free cause im a member.
however the 3 times i was there nobody asked for the certificate.
the last time we went last year there was a guy with a Bav 40 with his young family who confessed to have just done a "bit" of dinghy sailing, the rest of his family nada.
was interesting when he decide to fly the cruising chute, his 13 year old son was screamin on the radio help!
he got a bit overpowered, left his son helming, tried to drop the chute, it went over the side, he then tried to start the engine because he was being blown onto a lee shore, the chute went round the prop. hmm. the trusty flotty skipper and his crew rescued them and towed them into port, i had a [--word removed--] of a job getting in because of the catabatics, they were superb, alongside tow and peeled him off just in time along side a jetty, magnificent.
