Centre Cockpit, Moody etc... Diesel Heater, right or wrong location.

How long is the exhaust? And does the exhaust pipe include a silencer? Current Webasto installation guidelines say the exhaust can be up to 5m long if it doesn't have a silencer. The Eberspacher in my HR352 probably had about 2.5m of exhaust pipe.

My 376 has had exactly the same set up for 30 years without problem. Recently replaced by a Planar in exactly the same position.
 
I agree with those saying ' if it ain't broke don't fix it ' - also beware of the noise these heaters make, I did a sailing course in mid winter in a boat with an eberspacher, and despite our being very tired ( and possibly had a few pints before we turned in ) the noise from the thing kept us awake.

A lot depends on the quality of the installation. It's possible to make them virtually silent.

That did cross my mind Richard, but i can't think how the location would mean the heater only lasted 10 years. My very elderly D3L is somewhat unwell at the moment, but, although it's very elderly, i don't know how many millions of £££s have been spent to keep it running so long. Triggers broom ? :)
 
Our Westerly Pentland has eberspaker in centre cockpit port locker, vented through gunwall. Some noise and get dodgers nicely dry in rain.

Our LM has eberspaker at stern and I now am wondering about moving it as heat wasted by being pumped through long length of restrictive non insulated piping - but probably cant be bothered to work out where else it should go.

When I replaced that LM27 one as defective and upgraded from D1 to D2 with bigger piping (60mm not 50mm) it took much less than a day to recut the 6 bulkhead holes and rethread the new control wires and hot air pipe, and that's on a rather small boat with small underdeck spaces. I also just fitted a Propex gas heater to my new camper van and that took only half a day even though space even more confined.

I believe someone is taking the P in their quotes.

If I was the OP I would leave it where it is, or if there is a real issue with exhaust pipe length route it sideways to gunwall instead of stern. Probably 1 hours work

The exhaust is just under 5m and no silencer. I've also discovered a condensation drain at the low point in an exhaust elbow.

All this has made me decide to go ahead and replace like for like. Once again, thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

As has been mentioned, its been there for 30 years... onwards :)
