So now I'm getting cheeky. Hopefully I will get some replies.

If anyone out there has recently bought or has any info on what Centaurs are going for I'd appreciate knowing.

I've done some research and it appears that Centaurs are often over-priced and can be negotiated down quite a bit. It seems that there are lots around so supply and demand should meen they're fairly reasonable.

Here's a description of what I'm after: reasonable condition and sound. I don't mind if it's a bit tatty cosmetically, after all most of these boats are comming up to 30 years old. However nothing should be falling apart and everything should work.

Thanks for the help.

I have a 1978 Centaur which I bought about 6 years ago. Since then I have bought a new mainsail, complete new roller reefing system and new headsail, new sprayhood, dodgers and sail cover. My boat is in quite good nick (I think so anyway), although the insrumentation is fairly basic, not many fancy gizmos. Realistically, I would expect it to fetch 10 to 11k. Have seen many Centaurs in the yachting mags priced around 13 to 14K which I think is a little unrealistic. Like houses, boats are only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Hope this helps. Be prepared to haggle.

Delete new mainsail but add brand new 27hp freshwater-cooled marine diesel (complete with new shaft, propellor, fuel lines, Racor Filter, and so on), tillerpilot with windvane extension, plus a freshwater cockpit shower and you are close to my Centaur. Do you really think that STG14000 would be overpriced? I think that anyone in the market for a boat MUST visit as many as he can to get a feel of what people are expecting for what they are offering. I agree that many vendors have an unjustifiably or unrealistically high idea of the value of their boat; however, it is only by viewing that one may judge in a meaningful manner. My opinion.

Computers and boats ...

have one thing in common .....

Sellers remember how much they paid for them and think that market will support unrealistic s/hand prices.

Now I WILL put the Cat amongst the Pigeons !!! >
Typical asking prices of Centaurs are well out of the similar size range of that style of boat. I like the Centaur, but would actually buy a Colvic 26 instead ... why? 2 reasons :

a) asking price is generally 2-3 K less than a Centaur, for basically very similar boats.
b) the bilge keels are moulded on and also not subject to the splay that afflicts Westerly's

Having sailed both I found the Colvic better, but that may be due to boats I compare and not normal ... who's to say.

My experience in buying and selling a few boats is haggle, haggle and after the surveyor has pointed out the deficiencies .... haggle the haggle down ....

Finally I would not pay more than 10- 11 K for a centaur and then it would have to have been one that has had its keels re-bedded, its Volvo scrapped, stemhead fitting re-mounted, mast-step area checked, rudder sorted etc. etc. ummmmm shall I go on ??????

I bought my Sunrider in the end .... about 10 inches less in saloon length, but basically an older similar design for 7.5 K .... 5 years on its fine without major problems apart from having the engine beds changed .....

Yer takes yer pick !!

Nigel ...
Bilge Keelers get up further ! I only came - cos they said there was FREE Guinness !

Re: Computers and boats ...

Hi Nigel,
IF bilge keelers really do get up further, then surely some splay would be useful?
Or have I had too much Guiness? ;>)

Some fantastic bargains to be had over there. (Holland) As well as a very good excuse for a trip accross the North Sea. The standard of their round bilge steel boats has to be seen to be believed. No starved wippet lookalikes out there. Some good G.R.P and timber boats also much cheaper than over here.
