I have recently been experimenting with Celotex, both as an insulation, the 12mm and 20mm are exact fits in my deckhead and hull panelling and as a composite sandwich filler. I have so far had good results. Has anyone been using this material. I have previously used extruded polystyrene as a composite filler, with good results. Making tanks from epoxy and polystyrene, and then adding a few cc of solvent. Left overnight, the polystyrene plug disintegrates to nothing and the tank can have a final wash out. Can even fix baffles inside in that manner.

Yes, have made a silencer for my generator in the same way using polyistyrene foam block to fit in an awquard space coated in epoxy to seal it, then for cheapness just used polyester resin lay up. Did not need baffles as it is water injected.
As for your first mentioned use of Celotex. I discarded using expanded foam products because of the inflamablity and the fumes they emmit when burnt. Instead I used cork one inch thick to insulate inside the hull. Although there is now a fireproof Celotex. Keep on experementing. Chris.

celotex

hi, just to confirm that celotex/kingspan are "modern" building materials and as such are fire rated as class "0".

Your expanded poystyrene isn't.

That's why i decised to use it as insulation in my boat, against admittedly much cheaper polystyrene.

(I don't trust others either, so tried to set light to some, just in case)

I've certainly found a disparity in costs, between suppliers of Celotex. 25mm at Wickes was £17.50 and a local supplier was £10. Before anyone says anything, yes I peel the foil off before using in composites. But any ideas on faster peeling of the celotex.
