Been in Southampton area for last few days looking at various boats, never cease to be amazed at the way some people leave them, the one that we were looking forward to seeing was an absolute disgrace, both heads stank to high heaven and the carpet was so filthy that I'd have chucked it out. Windscreen wipers missing, those that were there were covered in rust, dash area filthy and covered with dead flies, upholstery worn and again filthy. How do people manage to stay on board with a boat in such a disgusting state? I felt as though I needed a good shower after being on that particular boat.

But every cloud has a silver lining! Fromn there we thought rightyo, we're here for a few days, let's see what else there is around at the used shows. Had definitely decided against anything with an aft cabin, had to be much newer than Blue Fisher, nothing over 40'.

So now we've fallen for an aft cabin American boat, much older than we'd ideally like and longer than 40'. But it ticks almost all our boxes. So now to the questions. It's an early 80s boat which pre-dates CE marking so presumably doesn't need a CE mark? looked at various web sites but none of them seem to cover older stuff now being sold. My assumption is that it doesn't matter and no CE mark needed.

It's also got Detroit diesels which I know virtually nothing about except what I've read over the past day or so. They're 2 stroke diesels, Detroit being the worlds largest diesel manufacturer. More complicated than standrd 4 strokes but seemingly pretty bullet proof if well looked after, but somewhat thirstier and noisier than 4 strokes. Anyone have anything much else to add? Any personal experience of the make?

Hi be very carefull about old detroits there very costly to maintain and spares are worse than volvo, there also very thirsty too, have you been looking at that hatteras in Berthons I wonder?

We have a early 80's boat with DD's onboard... and you're right, if in the EU, and the boat pre-dates the CE stuff then all is ok.

Regarding the DD's, ours are the straight 6's and from the 71 series and run beautifully. Bullet proof has been mentioned..

There are in principle three main lines of DD's ... 53's, 71's and 92's. the majority of the parts in the 71 & 92 series are interchangable and as such parts are reasonable to buy (We pay approx £9 for the oil filters from Detroit Main dealer).

All the engines come in straight series and V series and with or without turbo and intercooler. The V's start at V6's and up to 16's ... or was that 24's ? and covers loads of ranges... (Be aware of the 8.2L V8s', which are 4 stroke and have a mixed reputation) .....

Our straight six, were delivered from about 180 HP, and up to 485, pending on size of injectors, turbo and intercooler. All engines are reliable, but are sensitive if you run them hard and are overpropped. The exhaust on these engines are somewhat noizy, if you do not have water traps, but otherwise you should not notice any more noize than on any other early 80's 4-stroke. Fuel consumption is a strange thing really ... people "say" they use more than equivialent 4 strokes, but this is more likely to be when they are out of tune. Ours are kept in tune and we have very smooth running engines ... (At idle I can balance a 50 pence piece on the edge on top of the governor without it falling off)...

The engines was the choice of RNLI on the Tyne Class Lifeboat, where they have served well.

Before commenting more on the engines, I'd need to know what series and in which configuration/rating etc., you're looking at...

They are the 4-53s, almost 30 years old but with not many hours on the clock. It's a displacement boat so not many horses needed.

Would agree about the DD 8.2L's, but with the two strokes, my experience differs a lot.

Parts are no problem, as there are millions of units out there and any main dealer can get you any part you need ... very often you have access refurbished units with guarantee ... ...got a replacement injector last year for £55 from main dealer.... turbo's etc. likewise.

Main problem with engines are that they are thirsty when out of tune...., a simple job, anyone mechanically minded and with patience can do..... and as they could be tuned very easily and cheap, people did and on top overpropped the engines which lead to overload ... and subsequent re-build... These are not throw away blocks, so re-building is actually viable option...

4-53's ... getting on a bit, but fully servicable ... a relatively boyant second hand market for them as well. Heavy lumps (most DD's are) and Goldcoast Power in the US makes a good living on refurbishment and re-selling..

Analyse the oil and do a compression test if you can ... if not visually inspect the cylinder liners for damage (you can do that on these engines)... and if bad, calculate on approx £1500 x 4 for a professional re-build of the 4 cylinder engine, and knock that off the boat price.... or buy a refurb unit...

In a displacement boat, they should not have been overloaded.

Get the serial No of the engines, and give to a DD dealer... he should be able of getting back to you with the engine manufacture/shipping date, original configuration, load curve, fuel curve and accessories shipped..... is normally a free service and is great for checking how original the engines are.... and if they are not tuned, you should have engines which are good for 20K hours plus.

Thanks Alf, oil analysis of no use as engines have just been serviced so oil is new. How do I go about getting a compression test done?

Looks like I need someone mechanically minded to give them the once over. Anyone you can recommend in the Southampton area?

When was the boat imported? The age of the boat is not relevant to CE Marking if she's imported, only the date of import.

If she was in service in an EU territory prior to June 16th 1998 then she's exempt, if not then she'll need to be CE Marked /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just some information for you to consider.

Re; the oil sample, you can run the engines under load during a test run for about an hour or so, then take the sample and let the people dong the analysis know how new the oil is ... which by the way should be a straight 40 grade ... not 15W40

From Detroitdiesel.com.... and any of these should be able of putting you in contact with someone who can help you.... have limited this to the people who list the 53 series as specialist areas...
