Ccoitus etc "scuttlebut"

Re: Ccoitus etc \"scuttlebut\"

Oh, and as a final comment, I won't continue participtaing in this thread because firstly its pointless control freakery, and secondly it should never have been put in PBO to start with..... and I await your "I told you so" response with some amusement.

Re: Ccoitus etc \"scuttlebut\"

What brought about this unpleasant bitterness from you and Cagey? Were you attacked by someone at some point?

...Actually reading through lately there is an increasing propensity for peeps to come on these forums just to complain about other peeps who have their head up their bum....

[/ QUOTE ]
I would love to see these people in the real world walk into some pub and say the same sort of thing to the people sat there - what is it about the internet that brings out the whinging control freaks who have this idea that people will actually pay any attention to what they have to say?

[/ QUOTE ]

I would put it the other way round. It is only because this is a forum that the wreckers who are destroying the fora do so BECAUSE it is not in the flesh. If you are unhappy with your life or many things about sailing bug you, or you enjoy being led, well a sailing forum is ideal to get your own back innit ?

Well I think you just explained beautifully the bitterness in your own posts!

Re: Ccoitus etc \"scuttlebut\"

Unbelievable.....

Do you have an idea at all of how the Internet works?..... without some of these people with "thousands and thousands of posts", then the forum would be slow and inactive, far less useful as less people would bother to read it regularly, and would therefore not attract the breadth of knowledge that currently exists here.... it would in fact reflect many of the other far less active fora available on the net..

If you really are so offended by the fact that people have gone beyond just asking for and offering "words of wisdom", and actually started to form friendships, then I suggest you go try one of those other forums instead, where there is nothing but "words of wisdom".... several of them are really quite active, getting as many as 10 posts a week.... you should find that your questions are answered to your satisfaction in a month or two....

[/ QUOTE ]

I accept your theory but it is only a theory.

Another theory. When you consider how many thousands and thousands of sailors there are in the UK are you a little surprised as to how few contribute to these forums ? Either they have nothing to say or don't like the content or will take a group beating like this poster and others take. All that most seem to be saying is if you don't like it go away. Not one mention of how it could be made better to the benefit of all. I cannot believe that IPC expected it to turn out this way despite what people say about the internet.

Not one particular thing. Just an accumulation of things.

Re: Ccoitus etc \"scuttlebut\"

So maybe the solution is to avoid an unpleasant atmosphere on the forum by avoid making bitter posts and supporting personal attacks that may frighten newbies away from the forum?

On the other hand, in terms of the popularity of various types of forum: in descending order of popularity (number of posts):

1st place: The Lounge (has less posts but been going for considerably less time, so catching up fast).

2nd place: Scuttlebutt

3rd place: Motor Boat forum

4th place: Reader to Reader forum

So let's hope that this unpleasantness might at least help attract a bit more life and interest in here!?

Re: Ccoitus etc \"scuttlebut\"

[ QUOTE ]
.... However, despite the best of intentions from IPC it has failed. I could be wrong, but in my own view Scuttlebutt is finished as a sailing forum because of a large group of people who think they own it and do not hesitate to become aggressive and very competitive to the point of making it uninhabitable. Plus the endless nonsensical postings that only this select group can seem to understand or appreciate. This only serves to drive people away....

[/ QUOTE ]
Do you not see the contradictions in your own post? And the incorrect assertions "large group of people" "unihabitable" "drive people away"? This time of year boaty posts reduce because people aren't using their boats.

There is no other sailing forum this size and this active on the internet, most would give their eye teeth to be this active. It continues to grow year in year out.

Do you really think that each part of the forum is a seperate entity, surely you have been around long enough to see the same people dip in and out across the forums.

People were saying the same thing about the Mobo forum a couple of years ago.

Every so often a few whingers think no one is paying them any attention and have a little hissy fit, they don't seem to realise that attendance isn't compulsory and if it is not to their taste they are free to go elsewhere.

I don't think IPC and the majority of contributors would endorse your idea that the forums are in any way "failing", quite the contrary in fact.

Errrm. Is it me? If most think you are in the wrong place, why would you think it would be better if they went?
Better for who exactly?

There are other fora on the net that are beautifully moderated, some to the extent that a post is checked before appearing on the the board. They are, of course, dead - empty - not a soul to be seen.

You could go over there and be smug and content, and then come back over here if you actually wanted a good answer to a difficult question.

Sheesh. No wonder the Masons are closing temples left right and centre. No one will do things the "proper" way anymore.

Re: Ccoitus etc \"scuttlebut\"

Actually I am a widower and my children are all grown up, but we always had a harmonious life and never berated one another the way people tend to do remotely on here hiding behind a keyboard. My children have grown into adults that I am proud of and don't argue for the sake of it. They are in fact now my best friends.
While I did not agree with the original post that started all this I quite see where he was coming from. I have tried several times to inject a little humour into a serious comment, which is if you didn't get it, is that people coming on to these forums to seek an argument that they would not have the balls to have face to face in a pub (as someone else pointed out) are pathetic and sad and are ruining the forums for everyone else. So yes my friend, if you have nothing else but your previous pathetic comment to add, that includes you too! We have already lost a number of valuable contributors due to this behaviour, Some quietly and some, like ships cat with a parting shot across the bows of the great unwashed. I would rather keep these guys and loose the argumentitive bar stewards who only come on here to have a quarrel without any danger of getting their nose punched. Get it now? /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

brave stance made by this poster

such as cross posting to all the forums?

Very happy that he has a different opinion.

Very happy that he expresses it.

Cross-posting will immediately peeve a lot of people and will also mean that the message will be diluted.

Shame that a person who posts so irregularly should not find something boaty to post about.

This is a fairly normal boat forum winter problem and will get worse as the season gets closer, and we get more and more in need of a salty fix. You can combat it by posting more frequently yourself and understanding what is going on. It is a bit silly for a very infrequent poster to moan about the antics of those who use the forum as a way of life rather like a bus passenger on the Manchester/London route whingeing about it not going to Newcastle

If you dont like some people's posts - set your system to ignore this user.

Re: Ccoitus etc \"scuttlebut\"

For those of a sensitive nature or mood this bright sunny sunday morning.... do not read on!!!

Wow... certainly generated a lot of interest for something posted in the wrong place, took me a while to find the original cause.

Problem seems to me (is the plural really fora?) you cant see the face of the person you are communicating with, and as communication is something like 80% non verbal, that puts us all at quite a disadvantaqe. You simply cant judge the mood of those who will be reading, before pressing the 'post' button. The answer of course is never to say anything that might cause offence to anyone ever, keep it all perfectly factual (to the best of our knowledge) and boaty....zzz...zz.... sorry dropped off there.

I find it a very useful forum, I wouldnt be where I am today by following manufacturers instructions, and i'm very grateful for the advice i've had. Personally I dont have a problem with a bit of light hearted banter, and if it goes over your line, either walk away or have a go and say it where you like, theres no obligation to read.

I think all this sounds to me like February frustration, everyone waiting for fair weather to enjoy; in reality we would all have a group hug if we met on the pontoon.

Have a good sunday y'all.

Luv and hugs

They wouldn't get near my cockpit with those high heels on, I think Cliffe's is far more sensibly dressed, but still think there's no chance in february
